Which combo of 28mm & 50mm should I start out with?

Going through similar debate in my head after living with the 21SEM for a year (recommend trying one lens for a period - understand it, familiarise yourself with it)

Will try the 50 ‘lux next and focus on portrait shots for a while.

Then I have the 28 vs 35 debate to contend with. Many on here recommend 21/28/50 - but feel 21 covers my wide angle needs - so will likely try the 35 ‘cron (what I started with many years ago with the m9)

Think this will covers a broad range of scenarios for me.

Ehr…it is a 50 Cron? What do you mean?

Sorry, I now realise I just came from a discussion about the 35 cron mostly, so I assumed it was shot with a 35 mm.

Thank you @Harpomatic. I believe this is what i (and others?) call optical bokeh where OOF details are not sharp but can be identified, vs gaussian bokeh where details are too blurred to be identified. This is a subjective matter obviously but gaussian bokeh is not my cup of tea personally. Couple of Summicron v4 snaps below to show what i mean .Thank you again anyway 🙂

Hi lct, I see what you mean. I personally prefer a "gaussian" blur because it will not disturb the image and won't draw the viewer's eye.

For me a lens has to be as transparent as possible, and that includes the bokeh character. I want the image to just show what I saw without embellishing it or adding character, the image has to hold on its own!

Thanks!

Hehe but then you should never have gaussian blur, unless you forgot your eye glasses 😉 Just kidding. It is a matter of tastes of course. I had a Nikon lens like that (50/1.4) but none of my M lenses reaches that.

Well, I’m starting to see some Gaussian blur at close distance: my eyes are telling me that I am actually older than I feel! 🤓 I’ll know all about that blur unless I get reading glasses or retrain my eyes a bit!

It seems to me a good move would be to start with the less pricey alternatives and see if you like the performance. The 50mm Summicron V2 is a superb lens and can be found for not much money. For the 28mm, I've had both the 28mm Summicron asph and the VC 28mm Ultron II (very affordable new) and was so impressed with the Voigtlander that I sold the Summicron. The Voigtlander is solid (black paint on brass), small and a superb all around lens. The bokeh is always a strong consideration for me and the Voigtlander does what I like. The sample below is at f2.
