Lct is back with SD suggestions?

We only ruled out SD card issues with the M11 freeze on startup issue.

In any case, the freeze described above sounds like one or both: 1) an SD card the camera didn't like and 2) trying to enter image playback too quickly while the camera is still writing images to the card and the red light is still lit up.

Hi.

Many many many photos are corrupted after last firmware update for M11. Picture example attached. First preview is fine but when starting to edit in Adobe Lightroom, many will corrupt. I attached an example. Ayone else having this problem? Same problem with a different editor?

PS! Is it possible to downgrade firmware?

Thank you in advance,

Anyone noticing any improvement with the new firmware in terms of dynamic range or noise performance of 36 MP and 18 MP DNGs compared to 60 MP ones, which supposedly should be the benefits of pixel binning?

No, of course not.

Because ... first, the 18 and 36 MP resolutions are not created through pixel binning, and second, the lower resolutions are not supposed to improve dynamic range or noise performance. They just reduce memory consumption.

Anytime a freeze on m11 is reported, lct jumped the gun with 3 unhelpful steps:

1. did you do anything about SD card, such as formatting or what brand of it?

2. Did you do anything about user profile?

3. If above 2 steps failed to address issue, here goes sub steps:

3a. I have no freeze issue on m11 since firmware xxxx

3b. I’m just an old retired lawyer trying to be helpful.

this game has been played by him like this for over a year. :)

lots of people have argued with him in numerous threads, in vain.

step 3b is very powerful. You can’t argue or refute a totally irrelevant point like that. He always wins in the end.

You're putting words in my mouth here. My only tip about SD cards is # 3 below.

1. Switch camera off before mounting or removing a coded lens or adapter.
2. Switch camera off before mounting or removing the Visoflex 2.
3. Format memory cards with SD Card Formatter before inserting such cards in the camera.
4. Do not select lens detection auto for uncoded lenses.
5. Set auto review to shutter button pressed.
6. Don't feel compelled to follow the tips above, they are purely empirical.

I have been using 1.6.1 without issues and recently updated to 2.0.1. However after shooting for a few days I started getting corrupt SD cards. These are the same cards I've been using since I bought the camera back in 2022. I lost a whole day of shooting after one of my cards is no longer detected in my computers and ipad. If I put the card in my M11 it shows the message SD card not readable. I can't even format it in the camera, it just freezes when trying to format or playback from it.

I switched to a new SD card and it happened again. All of this happened right after updating to 2.0.1, I even got a couple freezes before the corruption happened.

I never had any freeze issues with 1.6.1 and 2.0.1 is looking like a downgrade. can i go back to 1.6.1? anyone else seeing this issue?

I just did a reset on the camera and am going to try one more SD card and see how it goes this week.

* I am using internal memory for shooting.

* 2nd copy is made to 170MB/s card. I will switch to UHS-II as soon as I can get my hands on one.

* I have been transferring from the camera, not using a reader.

* I had a two-hour chat with Adobe tech, and they were going around on my laptop. They asked me to talk to Leica about the problem but kept the case open. Waiting for Leica Support's answer.

I’ve tried two SD cards (SandDisk and Sony), both UHS-11, tried formatting in camera or using the SD format utility on my Mac, still getting the freezes.  Had been using the SanDisk before the upgrade with no problems.

It’s not caused reviewing pictures but happens when releasing the shutter.  Trying to replicate it, freeze occurred after a short burst of continuous at 1/60 - but I’d need to test it more systematically to see whether that was random.  Presumably also I will have to  try writing to the internal storage to see if the problem is SD card related, and then switching off e.g. auto-review etc.  This would all take time to do properly.

From reading recent posts it seems some people are experiencing slightly different issues. I understand from many years of delivering complex software that you get edge cases that are only revealed at scale and evade testing.  Still, its disappointing that the customers have to end up randomly trying to diagnose the problems on a user forum. Given the extremely premium nature of Leica products, you might expect someone from Leica chipping in here. If they treat live release as a sort of gamma test, they might have better ways of helping gather and assess the problems some people encounter with their very expensive cameras.

:o

Leica M11 v2.0.1 having problems with UHS-I cards is a known issue (see firmware's release notes). But freezing on UHS-II cards is bad news. Anyone else having issues with v2.0.1 when using UHS-II cards?

Hi! Just check the photos reviewing them on your camera? Are they ok there? Internal memory or SD-card? If they ar ok in the camera it’s a transfer problem. Had these issues using Leica Fotos on iPhone a while ago.

That can happen if the camera is still storing photos. Storing has first priority for the camera, rendering second.

Thanks for the response.  This was definitely not because was still storing the file, unless this procedure was hung up for some reason.  I took one picture, and then tried multiple times to exit the playback mode and then back into playback.  At least waited 45-60 seconds before trying to shut off and restart the camera.  This is when the camera went into the mode with spinning circle.  I had to remove battery to get camera to actual shut off.

I wrote to Leica last week regarding the rather thoughtless implementation of the new shutter closing feature on lens-off condition. I got this reply, so I'm guessing enough people complained about it 😆

"...we are aware of the lens recognition issue, and it will be addressed in a firmware update"
