At the same time as the new Leica M11-P, Leica releases a new firmware (version 2.0.1) for the existing Leica M11 cameras (Leica M11 / Leica M11 Monochrom).

The new firmware can be downloaded here:

The most important changes and functions:

NEW

  • The function  Self-timer  is a standalone menu item and can therefore be combined with the modes  Single and  Exposure Bracketing.
  • The new menu item  Tethering  in USB mode allows tethered shooting via USB cable in combination with the Capture One Pro™ and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom™ apps.
  • Leica M11-P only: Frames can now be signed with content copyright verification (Leica Content Credentials ).
  • Leica M11 and Leica M11-P only: Function  Extended Dynamic Range  for the optimization of darker image areas

EXTENDED FUNCTIONALITY

  • The first three characters of the file name are now editable.
  • The function  Off (LV mode)  was added to the menu  Touch Mode .

IMPROVEMENT

  • The camera shutter will now be closed during a lens change.
  • Faster connection to Leica FOTOS.
  • The remote control function for the camera via Leica FOTOS was accelerated significantly.

ERROR CORRECTION

  • Various errors in the firmware were fixed.

Very curious what "Function Extended Dynamic Range" means in practice (when I'm done at work I'll definitely be checking that out). Is it an JPEG-only equivalent of Fuji's DR400? Or is it available in DNG's to actually help provide more DR either in the default rendering or in recovery?

Looking at the v.2.0.1 release notes they highlight a rare case issue with UHS-1 cards and advice to use UHS-2…was this always the guidance in the past? Also I wish they were a bit more transparent about what I circled (in blue)

I am a little disappointed in the Tethering option.

with the update, you have to choose the option tethering, and a warning comes up that the images will not be saved to SD or IN. the other options are Apple MFi and PTP

if you are not connected the camera warns of no connection and does not shoot.

Sometimes during a shoot I would unplug the camera and keep shooting to the card, this is no longer an option. You need to go into the camera and turn it OFF

To me functionality has been brocken.

5 minutes of going through the camera menu with new firmware, I get error, "Battery Empty" on a battery with 85% charge.

Great start!

I haven't seen the error on camera yet, but noticed in the Fotos app (everything up to date) that my M11 looks like it has an almost empty battery despite it also being over 80%. The Quick Remote option kept toggling to enabled/disabled, but I could use it so it did work.

Can you not still use it tethered without the tethering option? I was already able to use mine tethered without this update and I believe in that case it also saved to camera storage - but it's been a while since I've played around with that and I might be mistaken. But it could be interesting to see if that still works without setting the USB mode to Tethering.

I just tested it here. My M11 is updated with this newest firmware, USB mode is set to PTP, I connect it with USB-C cable to my MacBook Air and in CaptureOne could use the LiveView to preview and capture photos. They appear in my CaptureOne session and they are stored on my SD card as well.

for me I can see live view, click on capture, and the image go to the card, nothing comes into Capture one.

I just tested Capture one 22 and 23 and iPad

Edit:

Same in Lightroom Classic

Apologies, you are right this is indeed the behaviour. I thought I deleted the image immediately as it was a quick test image but it wasn't in trash and trying it again it is indeed as you describe. I don't really tether often except when I'm being playful so I'm not too familiar with the workflow. Shame that it works like this though, I agree. Wonder if there's a technical reason behind this

My error hasn't appeared again. Touch wood.
