Wonderful photo and back story, and a most appealing person.  In there Daintree rainforest of northeastern Australia we met another boatwoman, who rescued bats.  We had the opportunity to meet and handle Suki, a flying fox she was rehabilitating.  Perhaps inadvisably, she allowed Suko for eat chocolate, making her a bit fat to fly well.

This is the kind of portrait that begs the question “would I like to meet this person?” And of course the answer is definitely yes.

Here in the UK, bats are heavily protected and large fines are in place for anyone who harms them or disturbs their nesting habitat.

For most of my life I thought bats were ugly and useless. When I listened as the writer interviewed this woman, it was like an epiphony. She completely changed my attitude.

Everybody knows about Batman, but this is the actual Batwoman. Her name is Pat Morton and I photographed her several years ago for a story about the bat research she was undertaking in the caves of Central America. In 2014 she was the first recipient of the G. Roy Horst Award given for bat research. She had one of the most relaxed, confident expressions of anyone I ever photographed.

You should create a portrait book from your career, Brent.  From what I’ve seen on this forum alone, you have plenty to fill a book.

if you already have one, let me know!

Thank you! That's a very kind thing to say. I don't have one, but it's an interesting idea.

You have one buyer. 😎But I’m pretty confident you’d have many more.

This must be one of the best portrait shots I have ever seen. It manages to capture what appears to be a truly intriguing woman, both physically and intellectually, and as everyone doing portrait shots will know, such a result is exceedingly hard to achieve (well, at least for me it certainly is). Thanks for sharing this wonderful image.
