Bobonli Posted August 5, 2023 Share #1 Posted August 5, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) What's with the car advertisement that takes over the entire browser page and makes it impossible to navigate forums, read or respond? It starts in the background and then takes over the main window. Not a pop-up and it doesn't appear when you first log in, only when you return to the site or try to use PM's. Not having this issue on any other website.
Advertisement Posted August 5, 2023 Posted August 5, 2023 Hi Bobonli, Take a look here Car Ad takes over webpage. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Anbaric Posted August 5, 2023 Share #2 Posted August 5, 2023 I don't see anything like that. Have you scanned for malware? Normally I also use an ad blocker: https://ublockorigin.com/ But I don't see what you are seeing even with it turned off.
Tom Johnston Posted August 5, 2023 Share #3 Posted August 5, 2023 I have seen it...and very frustrating. I just turned my computer off and re-started... we'll see

Anbaric Posted August 6, 2023 Share #5 Posted August 6, 2023 If it is just an unusually aggressive regular ad, that's a pretty strong argument for using a blocker like the one linked above. I find the web very annoying without one, even without this sort of trick.
RonSmith Posted August 6, 2023 Share #6 Posted August 6, 2023 I've also been seeing a full page ad overlay for Adobe. I don't see any way to close it, and cannot open forum pages.

Yes it was already raised yesterday, since then I'm trying to get rid of this annoyance… Sorry to all but I have to ask for a little bit patience. But if we didn't see adverts we wouldn't know, and so wouldn't be able to tell you, that the Leica Q3 is available for pre-order at B&H Photo Video and Adorama. andybarton Posted August 6, 2023 Share #11 Posted August 6, 2023 Good point, but if I were interested in buying a Q3, which I’m not, I’d be able to guess that going to a dealer to buy one would be a good idea. It’s the same with any advertising. How often do you buy something, that you wouldn’t have done otherwise, just because you’ve seen an advert? I can’t think of any occasion where I have. Advertising must work though, otherwise people like WPP wouldn’t make billions selling other people’s stuff to consumers. The Forum is a free resource, with a good value, for the majority of its users, but costs a lot of money to host. Hence the adverts, or the subscription model if you don’t want to see them. Bobonli Posted August 6, 2023 Author Share #13 Posted August 6, 2023 Thank you for looking into it. I understand the need to advertise. But that monster takes over the entire site and you cannot do anything other than navigate away. I'm sure the site admins don't want that, either. andybarton Posted August 6, 2023 Share #14 Posted August 6, 2023 Is there not an x in the top right hand corner? Or a button that says Cancel?
RonSmith Posted August 6, 2023 Share #15 Posted August 6, 2023 It appears to be gone now, but, no, there was no way to navigate away and access the forum.
hdokgst Posted August 6, 2023 Share #16 Posted August 6, 2023 (edited) Hi, I also saw this today, a few minutes ago - actually I saw a LUMIX ad first, then one for pet food… I understand that ads provide income to the forum. However, they shouldn‘t make the forum unusable like those I have seen. No ‚X‘ to close, no timer that removes the ad after some seconds, etc. There are discussions on google forums that it is possible to create ads covering the total screen with the ‚X‘ moved outside the screen area - so no way to close it except close the current window and start the forum on a new one. This kind of aggressive advertising is completely unacceptable (and does not let me consider to buy the products advertised!). And yes: I‘ve tried to log off and log on again, close the browser and restart etc. I say this probably on Friday the first time, then yesterday and again today. Have a nice Sunday, I’ll go offline of the forum and use my time for other things! Dietmar Edited August 6, 2023 by hdokgst Clarification! Bobonli Posted August 6, 2023 Author Share #17 Posted August 6, 2023 It's back. A MAZDA ad. No way to close the window other than to navigate away and come back, hoping it doesn't re-appear. It was not here in the morning (EST) but it's back this afternoon. It takes over the entire window, rendering the forum something of a smaller version of itself that you cannot navigate within.
