Hello,

Have done a fair bit of research but can't quite get what I want so will appeal to the Forum expertise.

I'm travelling overseas (Japan) for a few days and want to copy my daily photos into a secure SSD hard drive each evening as backup.

But I don't want to carry a laptop or any computer, or download to mobile phone or tablet.  When I get back home I'll download from the Photo Wallet to my computer.

Files will be JPG's and DNG's.

I only need about 1 TB capacity.

I want something which will just accept my camera SD card (preferably with it's own rechargeable battery) and automatically copy the image files from the SD card to the SSD drive.

Your help would be appreciated.

Hi David, I went through a similar thought process some time back.

While there are devices like the "Ex-Pro® Picture 2 Drive EX205KB SATA Photo Storage Image Tank 1Tb" it is old, has limited SD type support, and adds a new level of risk and possibly frustration.

SD cards are cheap, I ended up taking multiple cards to allow me to swap cards regularly and then store the used ones until I got home, limiting the impact of single lost or corrupt card.

Good luck with the quest.

I have some old Macbook Air laying around. It would be perfect for this job. Also nice to preview the results on the trip. And combined with a SSD drive or large USB stick(s) it completely rules out loss because of technical failure. I have a few 256GB usb sticks not larger than a thumbnail, so prefer them over a SSD drive for this job.

Options, FYR:

1) RAVPower AKA NewQ FileHub might help but it could be a slow motion.

2) Wireless hub with SD card reader also supporting USB or Thunderbolt external HDD/SSD

3) Reader supporting dual cards, with proper file management app supported

4) FOTOS with cloud services(SD-->FOTOS-->Cloud Storage-->Computer

IMHO, if you're going to stay in Japan briefly(just a few days), perhaps multiple SD cards or FOTOS would be the best shot for you.

In my very early digital days I carried a PhotoSafe, then an Epson P7000 viewer. Both are rather obsolete now given the size of image files, Now I simply carry many SD cards in card wallets, as many as I figure i will need for the time away plus a few more – yes I have a lot of SD cards

David, you're thinking of something like this, correct?

I remember those, they were all the rage for nature and outdoor photogs. Problem is that's from 23 years ago.! I haven't seen any reference to those in a long time, probably because computers got so small and versatile that people just bring the computer and justify the weight because they can use it for email, Netflix etc.

The last thing I'd do is go to a library or cafe and plug my card into a random slot and hope that the computer is not harboring some sort of malware. I won't use free USB charging stations for the same reason. Not too long ago a common combatant strategy was to discard USB thumb drives on the ground outside military bases. Soldiers pick them up, plug them into their computers and, Presto, the bad guys have access to a government computer!

Thanks, yes they are not very useful now (Digital Wallets) because everyone carries a Laptop.

I'm not carrying a laptop...Trish and I both have separate offices with desktop PC's, couple of Samsung Tablets and Samsung 'Phones.

My two laptops are old infirm and vvvvery slow with old systems so I don't use them.  I'm not in the mood to have another laptop for the time being with all the cost and continual pestering to update and endless spam.

Thaks for the enquiry...I'll have to use SD cards...which, I don't really want to, but no choice really.

All best...

Many hotels in Japan have a Business Corner in the lobby with a couple of desktop computers. In the more reasonably priced hotels where I stay, computer use is generally free for guests for the first 20 minutes or so. You could transfer your SD card photo files to a USB drive every few days in the hotel this way, to have a backup.

I have the Sanho Colorspace UDMA2 (1TB HDD) which is a perfect match to my M240 as it can process it’s DNG ( if required).

I also use the Sanho Colorspace Hyperdrive UDMA3 (2TB SSD) for my M10-R requirements.

Unfortunately Sanho was acquired by Targus, who are not interested in any further developments of this technology.

Have found some fittings to make my Samsung tablet to suck up my images from SD cards.  Also travelling with (fairly)  high capacity USB stick, which I can also attach to my tablet for secondary backup. Or just use any available computer (hotel) to copy (again) my images.  I'll carry the USB stick in my pocket.

Now well covered and fully tested. Should be easy and reliable backup... not complicated or too expensive. .

Will post some ball busting images of course. :)

The Sanho Colorspace Hyperdrive UDMA2 and more recently UDMA3 model are both portable battery powered Photo wallets.

After I started using these, I no longer carry a laptop when travelling.

After the initial SD full backup of DNG/jpegs they then do incremental backups.

As they both have screens, you can review & manage your photos.

they are still available in Sydney

Whilst in Tokyo, I always make a visit to Map Camera just 5mins outside of Shinjuku station. Give yourself at least 30mins to one hour just to peruse the shelves.

It an eye opener to see how Leica is so well used in Japan
