IanrM Posted June 14, 2023 Share #1 Posted June 14, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm on a (probably very long) waiting list for a Q3 - my first Leica. I had a Nikon z7 and numerous lenses, but at age 69, it was becoming a bit cumbersome to transport around, especially on my HD bike. A friend of mine has the Q2 mono and has lent it to me to get used to the controls. It produces some great images and is the right size and weight. I'm interested in getting some filters and quite like the idea of the Kase round magnetic. Does anyone else use these and are there any 'idiots guides' on how to use them ? Thanks in advance for any replies.

jaapv Posted June 14, 2023 Share #2 Posted June 14, 2023 Don’t use colour filters. They are worse than useless ND, polarizer and protective are the only ones you need. 3
stephem Posted June 16, 2023 Share #3 Posted June 16, 2023 Hello IanrM- I too am downsizing and waiting for my Q3. It is an excellent time to shop for filters! I’ve heard good things about the Kase lines, but I am not sure I want to use a 58 mm or 67 mm step- up ring to fit the Q3’s 49 mm threads. I am leaning towards the magnetic filters from Urth, which do come in 49mm and get good reviews. I might also move up to 52 mm to avoid any potential vignetting. i hope your camera will arrive soon, stephem
Pelu2010 Posted June 16, 2023 Share #4 Posted June 16, 2023 Hey, I can only tell you that by using the color filter you can see in the viewfinder how the image could render. I put the camera in low or high B&W contrast and I use my old B+W Filter I used back in the 80ties. And I can't see that the filter are making my images blurry. I use yellow and blue filters for some effects. cheers Peter

mhasman Posted June 17, 2023 Share #7 Posted June 17, 2023 Advertisement (gone after registration) I would only understand using color filters with monochrome sensor 8
Dr. G Posted June 17, 2023 Share #8 Posted June 17, 2023 I had the Q2 and the Q2 monochrom. Only found the color filters worth using on tbe monochrom. Because the bayer filter has three different colors in it the results of using the filters on the standard Q2 were relatively useless (to me). On the Q2M they did make a noticeable difference.
IanrM Posted June 17, 2023 Author Share #9 Posted June 17, 2023 Thanks for all your replies. I have no intention of using coloured filters. I will probably get UV, polariser and a couple of ND filters. If I get 49mm filters these presumably fit directly to what I would call the inner screw thread; the Q2/Q3 also has another thread to which both the trim ring and lens hood are fitted - are some filters fitted using this ? tommge Posted June 21, 2023 Share #10 Posted June 21, 2023 Is it possible that you screw an B+W 49 mm Filter, XS-PRO (Slim, MRC nano) directly on the lens and also use the lenshood?

IanrM Posted June 22, 2023 Author Share #12 Posted June 22, 2023 I finally decided on a set of 4 magnetic Urth filters - UV, CPL and two NDs with a 49mm ring. These all stick together in a little bundle in the palm of your hand - very compact, and very reasonable price, just under £110.

I have a load of magnetic filters, from my main set of Kase 82mm, to some 62mm K&F. Both perform well, the Kase filters are very well mate but they make nothing close to 49mm. I definitely wouldn't be using 72mm filters which I think are their smallest ones. I am going to buy a set of Urth filters. I rarely use lens hoods, so I will probably use the Q without a hood and just the bare lens, or CPL etc. I will be using it on a tripod a fair amount so I need a decent set of filters.
IanrM Posted August 19, 2023 Author Share #16 Posted August 19, 2023 I've only had my Q3 for just over a week, so haven't had a chance to experiment with the filters. It would appear that you need to take the lens hood off before you put the filter ring on and I've just put the UV filter on for the moment - then replace the lens hood. I'll see how that works, but it does look like, to get full functionality, you don't use the lens hood.

I think I will just leave the polariser on the lens, that said, is it easy to turn a polariser with the square hood on? If the set comes with a clear protective filter, use that instead of UV. IanrM Posted August 20, 2023 Author Share #18 Posted August 20, 2023 The Q3 is great - it's my first Leica, it'll take a little bit of getting used to having come from a Nikon Z7. The magnets seem quite strong; I don't think it will drop off, especially when the lens hood is on. The set only includes UV, polariser and 2 ND filters so I'll use the UV as a protective filter - I didn't know that you could get a clear filter - is there much difference ?
jaapv Posted August 20, 2023 Share #19 Posted August 20, 2023 The main differences between UV and protective filters are 1. Less aberrations on the protective filter through thinner glass, although the difference is normally not perceptible, 2. More or less shatterproof glass with protective filters. Hopefully. First Leica? Nice. A solid choice... If you care about money let it be your last 😉 I don't worry about it just falling off, more if you knock it, will it slide off into the lens... I see the Urth ones have screw threads too? That is odd. K&F and Kase are just flat. The Kase ones on my Z7 are so strong, almost too strong, well the lens cap is anyway. I have ordered them, will try vs the K&F and return the loser.
