Just seen the movie. A masterpiece. It deals with McCarthy witch hunt more than the bomb itself. The odd thing is, about half of the (very shallow depth of field) close-up portrait shots are front focused, the sharpness is not on the eyes but on the area around the ears.

Newly released study shows that fallout from the Trinity shot was more widespread than thought:

The NYTimes article that broke the story yesterday has better graphics, and a link to the study itself:

Picture houses put me off due to the ‘crunching and slurping’ of noisy cinema goers, invariably sitting next to me. I’ll wait for the DVD, whenever it appears on the market.

totally agree, and they also play with their mobiles sometimes...hopefully it will be available on a streaming service as well

Tangential to the main thread…

I once went to a Prof Brian Cox lecture in a conference centre. A guy sitting opposite to me on the other side of the aisle had a ‘10 ton’ bucket of popcorn and munched all the way through the lecture - tosser. It was really distracting!

You can, of course, shoot Eastman Double-X in your Leica if you want the Oppenheimer black and white look. (Vision3 for colour but then it is all remjet and ECN2 and scanning etc and doesn't have the 1940's vibe. Much more Barbie with all that colour!)

Here are a couple of shots from a recent trip to the English Lake District. Double-X in Ilfotec HC 1:30 6 minutes if I remember right, M6 + 1980's 50mm Summicron. Grainy and not particularly sharp but nice tones. I will experiment more. I'm not sure if I'm ready to commit to a 250ft reel just yet!

I'm looking forward to seeing the film. My 22 year old daughter just did Barbenheimer double bill (Oppenheimer followed by Barbie) and said she prefered Barbie but she may have been drunk by the time they got that far!

This guy didn't recommend it: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2023/jul/22/barbie-oppenheimer-double-feature

The movie's DoP Hoyte van Hoytema puts the IMAX camera on his shoulder in this casual 😄 handheld shot.

But eagle-eyed Leica users will spot something around the area of Hoyte's tummy, something precious.

The October 2023 issue of American Cinematographer has a long making-of piece on Oppenheimer. Among other things, it mentions that the processing lab (FotoKem) had to shut down its color-processing line for about three days for cleaning and chemistry conversion, in order to process the XX film in 65mm. At some points, they weren't able to process the b&w film for a week, so they shot the same scenes on color stock, as a backup.
