At f/5.6 or so.

Thanks everyone sharing their valuable views on this lens.  Horses for courses, some may find its performance not good enough for their work but some like me may like the size and all the things we can compromise.

I am blessed to be able to enjoy what I love to do and I hope everyone is doing the same.

Unfortunately you are fighting present day lens design.  Leica M lenses are corrected digitally nowadays as well, the newest designs do take that into account. The only thing holding Leica back for the M system is the retrocompatability with film Ms. All other new lenses for  other systems are hybrid designs to a lesser or greater extent.

That is why the SL lenses are so much better than M lenses.

Most definitely.  Nothing to do with the enormous size of SL lenses.  As a comparison - 50 Summilux Asph M vs 50 Summilux SL

Just received mine this morning

Overall sharpness, contrast, and saturation are surprisingly good. Very extreme corners show smearing, but I doubt I'll ever notice it in practice.

You tend to get fingers in the shot if you're not careful

The flares are amazing, and have that awesome Nokton 1.4/35 magenta flare

I'll post some actual decent photos when I manage to take some. It's an incredibly fun lens. My MS Optics 28mm f1.7 should arrive today or tomorrow, so maybe I'll post a comparison

This lens has a lot of focus shift when stopping down to f/4.0 and f/5.6.
Better be careful with that when relying on the rangefinder to focus.

And unfortunately I do notice the corner smearing (which is actually a huge amount of field curvature,
which also ruins the bokeh).

Station f/4.0, bike f/2.8

A couple examples with the MS Optics 28mm f1.7. initial impressions are no smudging in corners vs BS, much more glow, equally cool colored flares, looks much better, more difficult aperture control. Overall much more character in MSO 1.7/28 vs BS 2.0/28. Will do direct and sharpness comparisons laters.

M10 + MSO 28mm f1.7

That pic of the Audi? I know sharpness is not the be all and end all, but I am surprised as to how unsharp it is.  My Lomo Minitar does better than that!

Well my lens is lost.  AliExpress says it is delivered, but I did not get it.  I did get a package for someone else that has a $5 cell phone case.  Now to fight the system to get my money back.

Sorry to hear that, hope it gets sorted soon.

Just emailed Funleader to cancel my order after looking at Bastian's sample images in his PhillipReeve.net review.  The corners just look too weird for me with the narrow sharp radiused area, sanswiched between out of focus swirls.

My AliExpress vendor keeps saying 'lens delivered' ignoring everything else.  I've now escalated it to AliExpress themselves (how it's meant to be done) but the system if very convoluted and confusing until I finally found the right place to go.

Because of this experience, I would never use AliExpress again unless the item is super cheap.  Their method of shipping takes a very long time, and involves a hand off where the package is re-labelled (which seems to be where mine got lost), but with no delivery signature/receipt required.  So they just trust the process works.

Add to that a language barrier  - they are using AliExpress translator - and unless you are fluent in Chinese this can be a huge problem.  I'm hoping for a refund, and honestly after seeing the results from this lens and the MS 28 1.7, I've lost interest.

AliExpress themselves have denied my claim - and provided a USPS tracking number THAT SHOWS IT HAS NOT BEEN DELIVERED!!!

I have written them back pointing this out, even making it as easy as possible for them by providing the USPS url w the tracking number they provided.

They have obviously ignored everything I have said and shown and have sided w the seller.  No matter what the outcome, I will NEVER buy anything ever again from AliExpress because you can be scammed.  And AliExpress will back the scammer.

A couple more with the MS Optics Apoqualia 28mm f1.7. I still have to do a formal sharpness comparison, but the BS seems grossly sharper and more clinical. The MS optics is a beautiful mess of aberrations. The MSO 1.7/28 is generally very glowy and blurry into the corners until at least f4.0, has crazy awesome flares, and a focus that seems to drift with the slightest touch. It can have a perceived lack of sharpness at 1.7 despite accurate focus due to spherical aberration/glow. The MSO is much much lighter than the very dense BS. The MSO can be frustrating to focus due to the very short focus throw that's actually rangefinder coupled. Frustrating still is that the MSO deceptively appears to be rangefinder coupled below 1.0 meter, despite the fact that it's actually uncoupled at this point; the rangefinder is not accurate despite the patch still moving all the way to 0.4m. The only giveaway is that below 1m the patch moves much slower with respect to the focus knob.

Overall the MSO is much more challenging to use, but below f4 delivers messy and artistic images that are delightfully unique (and likely hilariously triggering for certain forum members). The BS could play a role as a more compact alternative to the upcoming Voigtlander 28mm f2.8, and seems great for standard street photography.

The MSO pics just look out of focus to me.  I don't think that is a triggering thing.  I just would expect more for over $1000.

it is interesting that MSO's 24mm pancake - which would seem to be harder to design for - does not exhibit the issues that the 28 does.

AliExpress is still denying my refund claim even thought their tracking number shows the lens has not been delivered.

They refuse to discuss why.  I am keeping a paper trail of all this showing the item was never delivered, and their refusal to discuss why they are ignoring that.

Thanks for the heads up to know dealing with AliExpress is troublesome and best to avoid. Hope it all gets sorted for you. Would you care to state the vendor to avoid?
