That would put the UK price at around £6,100 (including 20% VAT). If correct, that is more than I had hoped but less than I had feared.

How so? More like 5780. My bet would be below 5500

I use video for recording plays and music performances, so I want to record for at least 80mins at a time. It would be handy to use the compact Q3 for this rather than the SL2-S (which I use now). I could add an Atomos Ninja, but that makes a nonsense of the Q3 size. I already have a tiny Sigma fp that records to a SSD, but the Q3 offers the chance to (a) keep with Leica colours and (b) reduce my cameras by one!

I just started following the Leica Q with an interest in purchasing one in addition to my M11 and I have to say I'm somewhat underwhelmed by the specs. - It seems Leica is content to have the Q series be no more than a comfortable entry into the world of Leica with the hope that one would upgrade to either an M or SL. This must at least in part be the reason why there is a 30 video minute limit, no dedicated mic input, no cf express slot, no internal memory...

I divided the estimated US pre-tax price for the Q3 by the Standard Q2 pre-tax US price and then applied that factor to the current UK Q2 list pre-tax price (not the discounted price they are now often being sold at) and then added 20% UK tax. Now Leica, dependant upon when they forward bought/hedged Sterling with Euros, may feel that price is slightly more than the market will bear and they can afford to cut their margin by a small amount but I would bet there will not be much change from my estimated £6100. I have also ordered the dumb grip with the Q3 but I don't need to buy any batteries as I have 4 SL 601 batteries which will fit. I needed lots of batteries for my SL as I often used it on classic car rallies in third world countries (Laos, Myanmar, Cambodia etc), where it was not possible to charge overnight and the SL battery charger did not have a 12V input on it, like many other Leica battery chargers do.

I could cope with all those other limitations if it wasn't for the 30 min limit. But I agree, I don't think Leica sees this as a video camera - but I would hope that it can still take competent high quality video, even without all the features a video camera might have to make life easier.

It would probably have needed exterior cooling fins for more than 30 minutes or a large and heavy heat sink. Over the last 23+ years using digital Leica cameras (since the Fuji built Digilux zoom) and before that, 40 years of using Leica film cameras, I doubt that I have taken more than 10 videos and none longer than a few minutes. In my collection of Leicas, I do have a Leicina Special Super 8 Cine camera. Have I ever used it - no? Compromising the whole camera to suit the few (very few I suspect) who would choose to use a fixed 28mm lens camera for professional video, would seem a very weird decision. If you want to take professional level videos, best to use the correct tool for the job, a Red or Sony video camera, with Leica cine lenses if that is what is required.

So if I want to shoot video of a school play I should  take my Red cinema camera, lenses, a full lighting kit and crew? Seems excessive. I’m gonna guess many non-pros might have both the cash for a Leica and a need for a small discrete high quality hybrid camera, that can be used to record content that runs longer than 30 minutes.

I was talking about professional video not "home movies". A relatively cheap dedicated video camera from the likes of Sony or Panasonic with a zoom lens would be a better bet for home movies than a Q3. My daughter picked up a 2K Sony video camera with a Zeiss branded lens at a charity shop for £30.

Sorry to quote you slightly out of context but there lies the problem with the Q3 - assuming of course that the leaked specs are accurate

I received an invite to a "special event" at the Leica Manchester store for Friday 26th.

"Please join us at Leica Store Manchester to meet your new and unique companion that combines style and cutting edge-technology, empowering anyone to take photographs and video in breathtaking quality and which integrates easily, naturally and intuitively into everyday creative processes."

I believe Leica is portraying this camera to be a premium hybrid that is competent for use when requiring both high quality stills and video. Let’s hope this is the case.

What are your thoughts?  I have the Q2M...love it.  Getting the Q3.  Given the improvements cited, should I keep the Q2M or count on converting color to B&W?  I hate to have unused gear and I am afraid I will always grab the Q3 on the way out the door.  What do you think?

But if I want to shoot it alongside my SL2-S, with the same lenses, I am currently using the Sigma fp, which doesn’t quite match in colour.  The Q3 could have replaced the Sigma and Leica would have had another sale.

Mind you, I might still get the Q3 for travel and other stills. Or wait till the SL3, and keep both Q2 and SL2-S. plenty of options - but I’d rather have had the Q3 as my second video camera.

I was told it might be 3 to 6 months after official announcement before Q3 arrives

That seems surprising with Leica showing off the Q3 at Leica Boutiques around the world next Thursday. That's a lot of organizational energy to put into a product not arriving until Fall or Christmas time. Who's the Deep Throat?

I have the Q2M and have just sold my Q2 with the intention to buy the Q3.  I think the Q2M is so unique a shooting experience I won't sell it but will keep it for those intentional black and white trips.  It's a different approach, in the same way that taking an M11 is a mindful exercise

You may want to hold onto your Q2M until the Q3M arrives. Or at least until it's clear the Q3 is not going down the M11 pathway of problems.
