how about plugging in the spare battery with a topped up swapped in new battery. that could be feasible? not shooting live performances maybe but in the Himalayas?

I'm not the one going to the Himalayas! But I do a lot of live performance photography, and having 1-2 fully charged batteries is vital. I top up my batteries with the charger at home or in the hotel when travelling. A powerbank may be helpful for you and others, but it isn't for me.

Is the battery the same as the SL type 601 (Mk.1 digital SL), as I already have loads, well 4 anyway, of those, which would avoid having to further swell Leica's profits.

Wilson

Yes, it is (for the SL, SL2, SL2-S and Q2), though rumour has it that the Q3 will have the same battery form factor, and will be compatible with the current batteries, but will have new batteries with higher capacity.

I think it will be like Nikon's EN-EL15 a, b, c, ... (ot others): same size, higher capacity

RE battery: with USB-C charging pretty certain to be part of  the package why not just buy a powerbank and charge the camera with that? If you're not shooting an event, where you can't miss a moment (wedding for example) I don't see a reason why anyone would buy the overpriced Leica batteries.

Sometimes batteries are just more convenient than having a powerbank in your pocket and your camera connected via a cable hanging around. The combination that works for me is one spare battery + powerbank in case I run out of the second battery, but of course different people have different needs.

Having bought and grown to like the Q2 Reporter, I'll be sorry to lose the finish - the fibre grip is a real benefit IMO, and I find the colour attractive. I'm sure there'll be a Reporter edition eventually, but I probably won't wait.

yes, Reporter editions are very nice - but we have to wait three years more...  (as usual)

that's what I meant @LocalHero1953. I get the use of multiple batteries. Different strokes for different folks or something like that.

Obviously the need for spare batteries is directly dependent on how you use the camera.  If you don't chimp, and only use the EVF when out shooting, and pretty much act like you have roll of film in the camera (so no spray and pray).  The batt will last for several days in those conditions!

Really hoping the price is reasonable compared to the Q2 (as there is a rumor it will sit alongside the Q2), since the only feature I really want is USB-C charging, but it's an absolute must - I want the Q3 for backpacking (and travel), but there's no way I'm carrying an external charger and nearly doubling the bulk

The SL Nitecore charger is minuscule Another argument for the Q3 ?

Just noticed the memory card door on the bottom has a different shape - it's wider at the point where the card is inserted.  Could this be to accommodate the CFExpress card?  That would be nice.

If you compare photos with the Q2, the max width of the SD card cover is the same as the Q2. They had to make room for the 3-pin charging contacts so the SD card cover shifted to the center. As a result, a cut out in the SD card cover had to be made to accommodate the SD card slot cover.

So no, there will not be support for CFExpress.
