Today I received my copy of Sohail Karmani's book, The Spirit Of Sahiwal, and it far exceeded my expectations--which were already very high. Having seen the portraits Sohail has been posting here recently, I anticipated a book mostly of portraits. What I received is a great deal more. It's hardcover, masterfully printed on high quality stock and gives a complete visual story of this part of Pakistan with gorgeous, beautifully composed images of street scenes, villages and the people. Sohail's understanding of light, exposure, composition and timing is exceptional. I have a fairly large collection of photo books by some of the recognized masters, and this book is as good as any of them. It's going to have a place on the coffee table in our living room for a long time. Congratulations, Sohail, and thank you!

Thank you for getting the book and sharing your thoughts. I'm pleased you like it. It means a lot. It was a labour of love.

I went through my copy for the first time and he has a distinctive style and his portraits are eye catching.

Thank you for getting a copy and for commenting approvingly. It's hugely appreciated.

It's clear from the images that this was indeed a labour of love for you. It's also clear that you were able to establish a connection with the people you photographed. Do you speak the language or did someone translate for you?

I'm a Brit of Pakistani heritage and speak Punjabi which helps immensely. I also spend a lot of time with my subjects. For the picture of the front cover, it took almost an hour just to convince him to pose for me. When he eventually agreed, it was all worthwhile. As you will know, sometimes you get a subject who looks potentially amazing and then when you stick a camera in their face, it's not working. And yet other times, someone who looks unremarkable can produce photographic magic! Portrait photography can be very unpredictable like that.

Thank you! Do let me know when you get it.

I got your book yesterday and I am still overwhelmed by your amazing book Sohail. Wonderfully printed, high quality, really a bargain. But of course the most important part of the book is the content. And to be honest, I have never seen so many beautiful and breathtaking portraits in one book. Not only the portraits, the interesting faces, full of life, love, pride, pain, tragedy but also the perfect combination with the background and lights/shadows. After looking at your photos I was thinking to sell all my photo gear and to switch to collecting stamps or coins.

Thank you so much for your kind words. They're really appreciated. To be honest, I sometimes think about selling my own gear too. I think it happens to all of us. For what it's worth, I think you're a great photographer. I'd leave the stamps or coins for another day! :)

I had the same reaction, Marc. In fact, it's the same as my reaction when I see your wonderful portraits. 😁

Thank you very much for your encouraging words Brent. This is really very kind of you. But please do not forget that you see here only a „best of“ my shootings. You do not wanna see the „worst of“😉

I'm afraid that's true for almost all of us. I'd never want my outtakes to be seen by anyone.

My copy finally arrived yesterday (the first one got lost in shipping).  My high expectations were exceeded as soon as I saw the size (large) and quality of the publication.

Thanks for getting a copy. I hope you enjoy it.
