My M240 bug bears - does the M11 solve them?

Hi gang,

I've had an M-E 240 for four years now and I rarely ever feel the need for a newer model, though there are two things that irritate me and I wonder if the M11 solves them (or even the M10 - but I figure the M11 board probably has more experience with the M10 than the M10 board does with the M11!). 

First off - shutter lag when using matrix metering. Most of the time I am happy to spot meter, though if zone focusing and shooting street I would rather matrix when shooting fast. The 240 doesn't allow this due to shutter lag. Solved? 

Secondly - no ability to move the zoomed in focus point in live view. When shooting portraits with a Summilux I'd love to be able to zoom in and check the eye in any point in the frame, like on the SL. Do we get this on the M11?

I've looked elsewhere and never managed to find answers to these questions about either of the new models. When the time does come to upgrade though I figure I'll probably want to skip the M10 if only because of the (alleged) terrible battery life in comparison to what I have.

I work from home three weeks a month and then rotate capital cities around Aus and NZ for the other one week

Reminds me of my working days , In ANZ I used to do 10 cities in 10 business days…. I think I spent more time in planes/airports and taxis….

I can relate. I once did 8 flights in 4 days in Europe. Or 4 flights in one day. Exactly three hours on location (including 2 30min taxi trips) to give a presentation and fly off again. Happy those days are over for me.

For the First Point I assume with Matrix Metering you mean "multi-field".  I have never owned a M240, but all three metering modes shutter operates the same and I do not feel shutter lag, although there is a lot written about M11 shutter lag related to new method for metering directly on the sensor.  

For Second Point :  See the copy of M11 instruction page for how magnification works.  In my opinion not quite as smooth as on SL, but overall works well.  The focus/zoom point can be a pain sometimes as with Live View on the LCD can get bumped and move the point where the camera magnifies the image.  I have set the top function button to quickly turn off and on the Live View, which helps save battery, but also helps reduce accidentally bumping of LCD in Live View.

Just to add to above point.

I have turned off auto magnification on lens turn and instead use the little button next to shutter to turn it on and off.

I you move the zoomed square with joystick or touchscreen, the area stays there. Use the little button too quickly on and off.

Both are solved with M11. 
 

1. I remember both M240/M10 can only do matrix metering in LV mode as the cmos needs to be utilized while the shutter curtain is closed in default mode. Both M240 and M10 are very very slow/laggy in LV mode. M11’s default metering mode is now matrix metering with the cmos and the shutter is always open. It’s as fast as any other M11 metering modes. 
 

2. you can move the zoom in point with M11. Even better, you can touch the focus point and then zoom in, it’ll zoom in right to the point. Not possible with M240/M10 as they do not have a touch screen (and I remember you can only zoom into the center).

Yes due to LV mode faster than advanced or LV modes on M240.

Yes the focus point can be moved on the M11.

240 has no touch screen and no movable focus box in LV (can only zoom to the centre)

M10 (and M10-D 😁) has no touch screen but movable focus box in LV via the ‘D’ pad

M10 P and R have the touch screen feature and focus point can be selected via touch.
