What were you shooting before? How does the 50ASPH compare?

I still have my M11+50APO M+ 28Elmarit, and my Q2 (out for service due to dust in the lens focusing system). I have done a couple of side by side shots with the 50APO-M, but its too early to draw any conclusions.

So far the lens seems great. Lightweight, great ergonomics. First impressions are the overall materials & quality seem comparable to the APO lenses I also handled today at the store.  Focus is very quick on the SL2, including close focusing. I needed an AF option for kids on the move and due to failing eyesight .

The Leica store mentioned the lens is made by Leica, in their Portugal facility. It did come with a Leica manufacturing certificate signed by a Portugese QA engineer :)

I just purchased the SL2 + 50ASPH kit. Here are a couple of quick (boring) test shots, shots are unedited, except for LR->JPG export, shot at F2

Thanks for posting. Obviously, too early to make any conclusions.

However, what jumps out at me on this image is the doubling in the OOF area.  Might just be camera shake or something.

You might want to check if this shows up in similar images, most people don't care, but it is something I have become sensitized after owning lenses that did this a lot.

The other 2 posted images, where the background is really blown out, doesn't show this, but they don't have the same transition zone with fine OOF structures.

Got a call from my local Leica shop that they had a copy of the 50 ASPH and "all" the kits but no 35's or 50's for sale without kits yet.
Anyways, I didn't test it thoroughly but did get to play with it for a while. Focus was fast and sure, weight and size were perfect, you really notice how light it is, but doesn't feel cheap, materials feel like other SL lenses....I'm getting one for sure.
Most the shots and crops I took are of the employees and didn't ask if I could post them..Here's a few non employee shots on my SL2 wide open with the new 50mm Summicron ASPH.

The 2 crons side by side

I was going to say it's the Peak Design Travel Tripod head but not sure they come with silver finish to the dial, mine is certainly black anyway, looks like same plate and locking mechanism.

In case people are still on the fence regarding these lenses, Sigma is also going to announce a 50mm F2 lens, which could be a viable alternative to both the Panasonic and Leica 50mm asph:

フィルター径:58mm

The silver top is the Peak Design x Leica Travel Tripod, limited to 300 pieces. I saw it in Camera West, Walnut Creek.

In Canada, with the promotions, buying an SL2 or SL2s bundled with either the 35 or 50 ASPH, costs less then the camera alone. If you are in the market for a new  SL2 or SL2S, then this is a no brainer.

with the sigma 50/2 coming, that makes 4  50/2 and 3 50/1.4 native L mount lenses. Maybe someone will compare all 7 with each other.

yes!

it would be very nice to see a comparison - whether anyone will seriously make the effort?

Even without knowing it exactly (most MTFs are known), at 50mm I expect:
First place clearly for the APO-Summicron - with 750 grams and approx. 4,500 euros.
I expect second place for the future Sigma, 350 grams, 11/9 optical elements, i-Series, aperture ring; something in the region of 600 euros.
Places 3 and 4 for the optically quite/exact same formula; Summicron-SL/Panasonic, 400 grams/320 grams, 2,000 euros/500 euros with a slight lead for the Leica.

but only estimated...  (I'm sure about 1st place!)

The equivalent thread in the German forum has some very impressive shots taken with the Panasonic 50mm.

I wonder what the terms of the L alliance are. For example, does Leica just take a look at the Panasonic/Sigma line and decide which lens they want to Lecalize?

Or is there a pre-agreement that some lenses will be jointly developed and marketed first by Panasonic/Sigma and later by Leica?

Either of these options gives Leica a good basis to develop excellent budget (in Leica terms) lenses. There could be others of course.

Wow, this will be what feels like the 900th 50mm lens for the L mount, and still no Leica telephoto or wide primes? It seems like camera companies were more fun in the old days...if you look at the lens catalog for Leica R, or especially something like Canon FD mount or Nikon F they were filled the brim with useful and admittedly more niche options. I love 50mm, so it is not that, but I wish we had a 100mm Leica macro, a 135mm lens, a wide tilt shift lens, a 21 and/or 24mm Leica lens etc...let alone an autobellows, elpros, teleconverters etc. I am not saying I would buy everything, but it seems like so many of the special lenses have been dispensed with because of things like photoshop perspective correction and perhaps Leica's feeling that in certain cases high resolution means it is ok to crop, or that zooms are good enough (show me a zoom and the same focal length prime from the same company is nearly invariably better). All that said, you can pry my 50mm APO Summicron SL out of my cold dead hands...

That's because there's no such thing as enough 50mm lenses.

In fact, I plan to buy this Sigma, and possibly replace my APO 50mm (maybe...) because of weight and size.

I‘m using Sigma‘s 24mm 2.0 i-Series and love this  lens; but all Leica APO-SLs are fantastic, but expansive, heavy, …

Well, for my standard 50 on the SL2-s I’ve settled on a Summicron-M. If I want autofocus, I’ve got the Sigma 45. For 35mm, I use the Sigma f2. In fact, from every FL from 24-75, I am covered either by Sigma or Leica M lens primes. For my own work, it is everything I need.

However, I think these 2 new Summicron asph 35 & 50 lenses are overdue and will be very well received. I prefer to use an aperture ring on the lens and so, unless the new Leica 35mm f2 proves to be vastly superior to the Sigma 35mm f2 contemporary, I won’t be swapping just yet.

I don’t see my own preferences as being at odds with Leica at all. In fact, the opposite must be true; without the L-Mount alliance I wouldn’t have bought an SL. I’d dismissed it for years because of the size of the proprietary APO & zoom lenses (superlative as they obviously are). The Alliance changes that completely - my SL2-s with either an M or small Sigma is just lovely to use - and, at last, Leica itself has offered up a smaller, lighter, native a/f option with the new 35 & 50.

I’ll look forward to all of the comparisons but, at the end of the day, what a fantastic and flexible system the SL has become. Absolutely brilliant! This is a good time to be a Leica SL user.
