I was thinking of getting this lens, but I see that Leica Rumours says that it is likely that a new one will be announced soon.

An economics professor once said to me, never make an economic prediction, you will always be wrong , but if you are forced to, just give the tendency, never say by how much; and if you say by how much never say when. Leica Rumours is a bit like this, I know, but probably a grain of truth somewhere.

My question is, what could they possibly improve in the 90mm SL APO?

It would be interesting to see an updated 90mm M Apo with close focus capability and improved sharpness. A silver anodized version instead of the silver chrome that was available for the current version would be a bonus! It would make an incredible portrait lens.

I don't understand the comments about the motor sounds - mine are silent (35, 75, 90).
My 90 was sent back to Wetzlar for focus ring slackening, and it's still a bit stiff, as are the others.

My 28/50/90 are all doing something very audible, especially when the lens is doing a full focus run through. Fortunately they don't have to do that always, at least not in good light.

My 90 is silent too.

I regularly use the 90mm APO as the only lens I carry. Admittedly I bought it as a portrait lens, for which it is superb. But I recently used it as my only lens on a shoot at the Illinois State Fair and found it very versatile. I don’t have a 24-90 zoom as I have learned I always  zoom to the extreme anyway. Plus I like shooting at f2. So I had a one lens, one camera, one day.

David, Thanks for the comment. Another photographer asked me if I asked people permission to take their photos. At night, they accosted me requesting I take their pictures.

Leica has announced a replacement to their existing 90mm F2 APO Summicron - M, which is probably over 20+ years old. They have no plans to update or replace the SL 90 APO as far as I'm aware.

Love my SL APO 90 which does not make much sound at all. I am using the latest FW for this lens too. Very soft here, but when I take it into my browser it is MUCH better.
