I would imagine it would be a boon for multishot too...fewer potential issues, as you don't need to stitch together an interpolated bayer matrix...just pixel by pixel perfection...

I wonder how much multishot would help with a monochrome sensor. Multishot is often used to solve issues caused by CFA. Without CFA, it may not be worth it. Pentax seems to have eliminated pixel shift in its monochrome camera.

For me at least, multishot is more interesting for increasing resolution than it is for eliminating moire, which is already minimal in a camera like the SL2. It also introduces its own artifacts (like zipper effects in certain areas). The jump from 47mp to 187 is a real improvement in resolution, even if it is hard to see without the best lenses and a very stable platform.

There is pixel resolution (which can be accomplished with simple or AI resizing) and detail resolution. Reducing aliasing increases detail resolution.

Jim simulated a multishot on a monochrome sensor showing that there is no detail/resolution gain with pixel shift:

Does pixel-shift increase resolution?

I wonder if that is why Pentax omits multishot in their monochrome version, whereas it has multishot in the color version of the K3 III camera.

Interesting! I guess it is up to the engineers to decide if it does anything. Either way, I imagine they would need to tweak the algorithm for monochrome. All I know is that the multishot files from the SL2 have a much larger file size and greater detail than the standard images. If they can do the same or improve on that for a monochrome, it would be great. If they cannot technically do so, then clearly there is no point.

Looking at the differences in resolution between the M10M and the just released M11M, it’s pretty clear that the difference is not night and day, unless you are printing billboards. These cameras are becoming a bit like iPhones….. the improvements seem incremental or not mission critical. And I think that’s down to how competent really all cameras have become.

I don’t need an increase in resolution from the SL2, could care less about a swivel screen, internal storage, or variable resolution. Better battery life, more dynamic range, less noise….a slight reduction in weight - these would all be nice. But I really don’t think any of them is going to make an appreciable difference in the photos I take with the camera.

I REALLY love the SL2, IBIS is a wonderful crutch, the EVF, the versatility…. I think they really got it right. At this point I’m really more interested in getting an SL2-S as a back up then I am excited about the SL3.

But we’ll see how I feel about it in the fall 🤣

I bought a 2nd hand 2-s while waiting for the 3. What I would hope for is following:

- long exposure possibilities as with the m11 (lenr is terrible before m11)

- iso performance close to 2-s

Those two things would made me buy the new SL3. If not, a used SL2 would perfectly match the 2-s and money saved would go to lenses (sl75, sl21, m24, fe)…

  • 3 weeks later...

It’s a snowball rumor that keeps rolling and growing, until the snow melts. It started as usual with a friend who knows a guy who worked at a camera dealer who had heard from his ex girlfriend in Brussels that Leica was launching a new camera next year. Someone smartly said it was likely to be the SL3 which meant the snowball continued to grow with that addition…

Nov 2019 to Nov 2024 is indeed a five year cycle. I could definitely see this. I could also see the sensor being > 60 MP as their flagship mirrorless product in this highly competitive space. I would hope to see 80 MP in an SL3, SL3M and 40 MP in an SL3-s. Also tiltable/articulating rear screen and Phase detect AF. The rest is all good (ergonomics, VF, menus etc). And do make sure either the 21 APO or 24 APO SC are available before launch.

Source was the owners of one of the largest Leica Stores in the country. Bummed me out to hear as I was hoping for a sooner release. Perhaps its getting a new flagship sensor otherwise I don't get the long delays between models.

Perhaps the delays are due to the fact that the SL2/s system has not been the cash cow Leica had hoped for and they are pondering the future direction of the system? They had great momentum on the original SL but then eventually the slow roll out of lenses must had contributed to many deciding to move on to other systems as the competition caught up in the mirrorless space, particularly if AF was a key required feature. Or, perhaps they are hoping the SL3 will be the "third time around charm", and want to make sure everything is dialled in tight before launching...

Post #212 from @jplomley would be a great combo and again would give many  people a struggle which one to buy.

Personally late 2024 would fit me: it gives me some more time to save some money cause I guess the camera will be higher in price then the current price ones.

I'm afraid we have heard too many unnamed sources with no track records in accurate predictions for us to treat Leica rumours as reliable. Previous 'sources' have said this year.
Given that the next gen Panasonic (S5 ii) has been out there since January, a two year wait for a Leica equivalent seems unlikely.

they're probably working on the mirrorless S4, ive always believed the SL was also used as a kind of test system for a mirrorless S, and one of the screen grabs from the leica video linked in other older threads, does show am SL body with a much bigger mount space.

probably just cut this sensor to size:
