It’s a snowball rumor that keeps rolling and growing, until the snow melts. It started as usual with a friend who knows a guy who worked at a camera dealer who had heard from his ex girlfriend in Brussels that Leica was launching a new camera next year. Someone smartly said it was likely to be the SL3 which meant the snowball continued to grow with that addition…

... sorry but the ex girlfriend was not in Brussels. It was the great great granddaughter of Oscar B. from Wetzlar and she is the designer of the SL-Line  -  nobody knows but me :)

And the SL3 is skipped because of the energy price increase for power made of coal and gas in Germany. They develop now the SL4 ...  green hydrogen energy :)

A mirrorless camera using PDAF requires photodiodes that are physically masked to receive light from only one side of the lens, left vs right or up vs down.  Light from a left -right or up down  pixel pair  is compared and the phase difference used to determine the focus point. Since the M11 sensor, doesn't use PDAF, it doesn't have those special pixels. Not having them is a selling point for the M11 because all the pixels are used for creating the image, which means less potential artifacts that need to be compensated by software. In an SL3 with FDAF, they could use the M11 sensor design as the bases to design one with PDAF specific pixels, whether that means fabricating a whole new sensor or just making changes to the microlenses on the pixels, is a good question, but I would guess it would take more than just changing the microlenses.

You have it backward. The M11 is derived from the A7R4/5 sensor with the PDAF stripped out and the other usual changes, such as M-specific microlenses and UV/IR filtration. Adapting the 60mp PDAF Sony sensor for the Q3 and SL3 will be easy. It's just generally here in this forum, we still say, "The Q3/SL3 will have the M11 sensor", but that's not exactly what is meant.

Jplomley and Big Baby Earl,   Your posts at 212 and 213 are spot on.  Only I wouldn't stop at 60 MPs for the SL3...think bigger and Big Baby Earl was correctly informed.  r/ Mark

PS  I forgot to remind those who may not recall, Leica enjoys surprising the photographic world...this includes the SL3 and S4.  Stay tuned and start saving.

Encouraging news indeed! And all the more reason to get those Wide Angle APO SC's out the door! It can't end at 28 mm 😞

The SL3 and S4 will likely share sensor technology, as has been the case in the past with eg M11 and S3.

I'm reading the rumored Leica Q3 tea leaves for a look at what might come with the SL3 in 2024 😉

Here are the latest/rumored Leica Q3 camera specifications:

  • Leica is expected to announce the Q3 in the last week of May
  • Improved focus illumination mechanism
  • Contactless charging system (similar to how an electric toothbrush is charged)
  • New finish
  • Same 60MP sensor and image processor as the Leica M11
  • Same body, lens, and image stabilization as the Leica Q2
  • Code name “Wilson”
  • Higher price than the Q2 (currently $5,795)
  • Tilt screen
  • Higher MP EVF
  • Internal memory
  • USB C charging
  • 8k video (I have been going back and forth on this one, still not 100%)
  • Phase detect AF
  • New handgrip with wireless charging
  • Shutter button with a traditional cable release
  • Same Leica BP-SCL4 lithium-ion battery but with higher power/mAh (milliamp/hour)

Some nice upgrades but what's missing is another focal length option.  How about a 50mm f1.4?

I like the idea of 50mm, but I think f1.4 would be too large... I think I'd be happy with a great 50mm f2 lens, like the APO 50. But there again that may be dreaming...

I believe, we have a missmatch. We are in the SL3 rumors thread. 🙈

Yes, i agree. I am waiting for the APO Summicron—SL 2.0/21 since years. Forecast was end of 2021.

I need the 24 APO SC to add to my 35 and 75 APO SC for the perfect trifecta. I'd be set for the next decade of imaging easily with these optics.

Oops, my bad, I think I caused some confusion above... since the Q3 is likely coming soon and I'm interested in that camera, I let my excitement get the better of me.

Now, at the same time, I am also interested in the SL3 as no matter what the Q3 comes out with, I will still need (want?) an SL camera to use those beautiful SL lenses with ;)

... and what is with a 180mm (maybe a 135mm) - my workhorse during Leicaflex/R times? The 100-400 or the 90-280 are a no go for me. The pity is, that Sigma or Panasonic don't play in this range (ok there is a zoom leica certified ... but...).

I would most certainly add a telephoto prime in this range. I think Leica should be offering the same range of focal lengths that they did for the R series. If they could do it then, they can do it now, and better. I would be all over an 18 mm rectilinear lens as well as tilt-shift and a macro allowing 1:1 magnification. If the SL truly is the long-awaited replacement for the R, then replace it in full, not in dribs and drabs and not half-cocked by relying on Sigma/Panasonic. I buy Leica for Leica, not to be able to use Sigma or Panasonic.

My problem is, that I don't like to have three mirrorless systems (M an sL are enough). So it is better than nothing to have a Sigma or Panasonic lens. But you are right, I don't want a rebrand. Yes, the Sigmas are not bad ... but far away from the "heard warming". And no, the SL is no full R replacement and will never habe so much lenses. This time iss over ("cry") - and the L-aliiance is a chance to find a place between CaNISo. Hard enough and when rebranding halps - why not, but they had to look at the Apo-Line.

At the weekend I take some shots with my "goat" 100mm Apo-Macro ...  And I had printed today some shots from the 80th make with a Summaron 2,8/35 from the 60th ... must I say more?

The Leica APO-Summicron-SL 2.0/21 ASPH. is just around the corner. I saw one lens last week in Wetzlar (for internal testing), no official release. Nobody was talking officially about the lens.
