MM1 with 7Artisans 50mm f/1.1 Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! Your 7 Artisans shots finally got to me. Mine arrived yesterday and I did the focus adjustment this morning. I have to say I'm really impressed. The damn thing is outperforming my Leica Noctilux. It's also a lot lighter so I don't feel like I have a brick hanging around my neck and it's smaller so it doesn't block as much of the viewfinder. I hope to have something worth posting within a few days. Cheers, Brent Edited November 14, 2019 by fotografr
RobM Posted November 14, 2019 Share #2685 Posted November 14, 2019 It's surely embarrassing to Leica when you consider the price difference between the Noctilux and the 7Artisans 50mm 1.1. I don't think there is a better deal out there right now. And no, sadly I'm not on commission! The combination with the Monochrom is just perfect. I look forward to seeing what you come up with, Brent!
DwF Posted November 14, 2019 Share #2686 Posted November 14, 2019 (edited) It's tempting me as well. Is there an issue with consistency with the 50mm f 1.1 from 7Artisans? Edited November 14, 2019 by DwF

Is there an issue with consistency with the 50mm f 1.1 from 7Artisans? If there is I haven't heard about it. I think there may be inconsistency in the way people adjust focus on the new lens. It's not complicated but does require some patience and a careful setup. After adjusting back and forth three times, I hit the perfect spot and was immediately shocked to see that the 7 Artisans was sharper wide open than my Noctilux. The lens comes with a tiny screwdriver and a focus chart. There are two screws that must be loosened on the focusing collar which then gets turned very slightly clockwise or counterclockwise, depending on whether the lens is back or front focusing. It's really pretty simple and worth the effort. At the price, I figure even if I had to replace the 7 Artisans lens annually, I'd still be way ahead. That's doubtful, however, because the lens feels very solid and well constructed. Edited November 14, 2019 by fotografr

I liked browsing your website as well. Your comment in this post piqued my interest... if I may ask, why are you on your third MM? Was is due to sensor or mechanical issues, or some other reason? Your comment in this post piqued my interest... if I may ask, why are you on your third MM? Was is due to sensor or mechanical issues, or some other reason? Thanks very much. I appreciate your comments a lot. I got rid of my first MM after learning of the sensor problem. I didn't have it in that camera but fully expected it to develop and I didn't want to deal with a repair of several months. Abouta a year later, I regretted that decision so I bought another one. It got the corrosion after about six months so I sent it off for repair and waited four months to get it back. I thought I detected a quality difference between the original sensor and the Type 53 replacement, so once again I sold it. After trying unsuccessfully to duplicate the look of MM images with my M10, I once again decided to take the plunge because a mint silver one with low shutter count was offered to me. I still don't think the new sensor is quite up to the original, but it's still better than what I can get from conversions. Also, I can again use red, yellow and orange filters for an effect I was unable to duplicate in post. All in all, I'm very happy with my current MM and hope I don't lose my mind again. Cheers!

Thank you for the quick reply Brent. I am glad you are happy with your new MM. It is interesting you found a difference in quality between the old and new sensors. I have read rumours about this several times, but you are the first one from whom I read first-hand experience. What differences did you find between the old and new sensors, if I may ask? What differences did you find between the old and new sensors, if I may ask? The main difference I detected was in tonal range and quality. To my eyes, the original files seemed less harsh out of the camera and appeared to have a bit more separation between tones. I'm finding I can get very close with the new sensors, but it takes a bit more work in post. Even so, the MM1 with the Type 53 sensor is a brilliant camera and I love working with it. Not in a discussion when comparing it with the Leica 0.95, I really do not see the Leica shrink in a comparison. I just can’t get rid of the impression that the Artisan enthusiasts are looking to these images/comparisons through their wallet. What’s unique at this Artisan is that the closest focusing distance is 70cm, a thing that Leica couldn’t present thus far with their 50 Noctiluxes. Which didn’t ever justify their prices for me in the first place.

The tonal range difference between old and new sensors is what others had also mentioned. As for the MM246, I am sure you must have considered it, but did not find it had the particular qualities that you love in the MM1?

I've purchased three f 1.0 Noctilux lenses and not been satisfied with any of them. Size, weight and image quality have been my only criteria. Strictly on that basis, I'd buy a new 7 Artisans 50mm f1.1 every year for the next 10 years before I'd buy another Noctilux f1.0.

I tried the M246 for a week and while I really liked the build quality and shutter, the images had too much of a smooth, processed appearance right out of the camera for my taste. I really like the CCD sensors for their film like results.

I have been looking at images from both cameras, and to me it seems the M246 is more technically correct, while the MM1 images have more soul. I am generalising here, and mean no offence to either MM1 or MM2 camp
