I would selectively sharpen her face using Topaz Sharpen AI (it will remove the motion blur). Especially the rims of her glasses deserve to be tack-sharp.

Thanks. I will try it tomorrow and post the result. Another thing I learned from you, Jaap!

Actually, if anyone is interested in a live view of what can be done with Darktable in expert hands.
This is Aurelien Pierre, one of the lead developers demonstrating his fast workflow style editing live any 'lost' photo the viewers throw at him:

I downloaded the trial version of Topaz Sharpen, used the standalone app first to remove motion blurr from the original DNG file and save it as a TIFF. Sorry for the watermark, I did not decide yet if I want to purchase Topaz or an other AI tool.

Original DNG

Sharpened 100% for motion blur in Topaz as TIF

Then I applied the same crop and mimicked the same corrections as before in Darktable.   Of course I should have used 1/60 iso 1/30 in the shot, but I like this recovering trick after the fact. (first photo)

Same Corrections and crop in Darktable  (as much as possible)
on the TIF from Topaz

So I ran Topaz Photo AI over it, their newest, one-click solution. It took me ten seconds (including hitting Auto in ACR) to get this result, which is already a lot better. Note the effect on the bokeh, which will need to be corrected later.

I then ran sharpen AI over her glasses only:

Then I took out the Cyan and Blue cast, took away some Magenta and added Vibrance and Saturation. Colour corrections are always open to discussion :), especially under nasty light like this.

Do click the image for optimal sharpness.

So let's convert to B&W, add a black and a white point, give linear contrast in Curves and blur and clone out some nasty Bokeh as created by Topaz for this end result <click>:

I've been taking photos of my son regularly since he was 6 years old - always the same way with studio lights (camera was set to daylight). Here is the latest photo from the day before yesterday.

Cool! Have you considered making a time lapse video of it?

That is what I disliked (behind the back of the armchair). Did not want to mention. But you're right.

But consider that this is a rather extreme example. Any more and it would not have been possible without really extensive editing. This was a matter of less than ten minutes.

And this was working on a JPG, not raw, which would have mitigated the noise aliasing and bokeh artefacts.

Thanks Jaap. Indeed this looks great!
The speed of processing must have to do with the size of the pic in the first place and the difference of my 7 year old Macbook Pro hardware with yours?  If you wanted the original DNG, I can send it to you.

Maybe there is software difference (speed) between the standalone Topaz Sharpen AI and your method (plugin?), or because you have the full product
If so I would like to know. They give a discount that expires on 31 dec 2022.

The speed of processing has indeed to do with the hardware and obviously with the file size. Topaz Photo AI is faster than Sharpen AI and DeNoise AI. The difference between my old Macpro (4-core and 32 GB) and my Mac Mini M1 16 GB is dramatic. From 1-2 minutes to about 10 seconds.

Ok. Now I understand. My Macbook Pro has 16 GB 2.2 GHz i7 from 2015. Benchmarks indicate the CPU is 2-3 times faster. mine has 4 cores,  your mac mini has 8 and a much better architecture. We could get 10-20 times difference in performance because i suspect Topaz is heavily optimized for multi core CPU and GPU.
So a slider operation that updates in 10 seconds on the Mac Mini, for me can take 200 sec,  and that is exactly what I saw in practice.

Looks like I will have to sell some lenses and bodies to buy a new Mac 🙂
