Slightly off-topic but .... the n°1 most talked topic in the digital M sub forums is ... the impact of the SD card make, type or size on various problems like startup times, lock-ups etc.  People tend to always blame the SD card or suggest to try another card and see if the problem goes away.

That being said, in my almost one year use of M11, I never used an SD card and always the internal memory.  I also never experienced a problem with my M11 (like a lock-up).  Is this failure free use related to relying solely on internal memory, I do not know.  Am I lucky to have a camera with zero issues, probably.

But if I would ever encounter a lock-up in the future, I definitely know for sure it has nothing to do with the SD card type, make or whatever.

Just my observation, I wanted to share.

Strange reasoning with all due respect . You never use SD cards but you are sure others' problems don't come from SD cards. Am i missing something? FWIW i feel as lucky as you do with both internal memory and UHS-I cards.

Hi LCT, I think you misread my post or I was not clear enough (more likely).  I have used many type and brands of SD Cards in my previous M models (from M9 to M10 and most models in between).  I have had my fair number of lock-ups.  Were they related to the SD Card? Possibly and probably.  I have seen startup time variations between cards, so yes the SD Card affects the way the camera behaves.  So if I gave the impression that I'm sure the SD card has no effect on the camera behaviour, then that was my mistake.

The M11 - where I never used an SD Card - has been behaving very nicely up until now.  So people encountering problems with the M11 have an option to rule out the SD Card being the source by trying to use the internal memory and see if the problem goes away.

Logic suggests that digital memory that is integrated into the M11 is within Leica's control during manufacture where the factory can design the systems to work with the specific parameters of the memory and thereby maximise compatibility rather than need to deal with whichever of the hundreds of brand, speeds, or types of memory card the owner chooses to plug into it.

Of course, not all digital memory is equal in performance, protocols, and tolerances so where the M11's processors are able to work with "nailed-in" known and stable memory properties it is reasonable to expect that incompatibilities that might be factors that contribute to lock-ups, long start-up times etc won't be present and they won't be experienced.

What's not known is the anticipated service life of the internal digital memory (in terms of read and write cycles) and when it might need to be replaced in the future or at what cost.  Fortunately, of course the owner can simply choose to move over to pluggable memory cards at that point and 'manage' the replacement.

Pete.

Darn it!

This camera is making me look fat, I just know it!

I only wear it, never take pictures with it! The storage is all zeros! That's gotta be lighter than all those zeroes and ones!

But it's still making me look fat!!

In the words of Tolkien,

"It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to."

Phew. Now I'm outta breath....

Just curious, can others on this thread compare what their M11's empty internal memory shows without an SD card on their camera'a menu to the numbers I've posted above. I am sure the numbers recalculate once in use depending on the actual and various sizes of each image stored, but I am thinking we should probably all start out with the same numbers?
