Oh yes. They are great for super wides where you don't need the rangefinder anyway.

The ungainly elastic serves to decrease my fear that the heavy finder will fall off.

Glad other people are using these fantastic devices.... 😉 My MDa is a ¨Post¨ originally with the speeds locked at 1/50s and the trigger locked at the factory (only possible with a cable release) But I was able to remedy the problem with an OZTNO 14088. And succeeded by unscrewing a aim to find all the speeds...

This is my old kit. MDa & Summarit 50/1.5.

I used to say to my students, if you can make 30 out of 36 images from one SLIDE film perfectly exposed, sharp and well composed on this camera, your technical knowledge is adequate as a photographer.

PS. The M1 is also semi-blind.

My photo class in college (mid 1960s) was similar - back when most cameras were meterless (though the prof used a Spotmatic) - final test was to shoot a 20 exp roll of Kodachrome and show all slides to the class. I miss slide projectors...

At one time I used Kodachrome and Ektachrome almost exclusively. On one occasion I exposed a 120 roll of Ektachrome in my unmetered camera and I did not use a hand held meter. One frame was of my grandmother and was more or less perfect, a second frame was good enough to be published in a couple of books. Those were the only 2 frames out of 12 that were usable. That was 62 years ago and I like to think I have improved a little since then.

When I first started retinal photography, one place had an old Zeiss Fundus Camera with two Leica MDs, one was locked at 1/50 as it was only going to trigger a flash, the other had all speeds. When they were not using the camera anymore, I tried to buy the MDs. I was told they were medical equipment and couldn't be sold to an employee who wasn't a physician. A couple of years later I ran into a similar Zeiss camera, Leica backs, I asked to buy the cameras, same answer. Interestingly these were replaced by motorized Spotmatics.

The dark room of the photographer at my university institute was dismantled years ago and when I asked if there was any Leica equipment left I was invited to take that stuff home. So I got a MDa, MD-2 (both had to be repaired), some lenses, Visoflex III, Bellows II, and later on they found and gave me a M4-P. Of course I regularly all of these pieces of equipment.
