Advertisement Posted October 4, 2007 Posted October 4, 2007 Hi hsw, Take a look here Lotus . I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
fotografr Posted October 4, 2007 Share #2 Posted October 4, 2007 The b&w conversion really works well with this image. They are such beautiful blossoms most people would never think to do anything but a color version. Nice job.

cam2000 Posted October 4, 2007 Share #4 Posted October 4, 2007 I agree with Brent and Sam the mystic and beautiful lotus looks also very beautiful in your great shot!
macos Posted October 4, 2007 Share #5 Posted October 4, 2007 Hmm, forgive me, but I would be interested to see the color version. I have some difficulties with the BW because the lotus blossom does not separate from the background, althogh BW might be good as idea. Perhaps there are some possibilities with the channel mixer. hsw Posted October 4, 2007 Author Share #6 Posted October 4, 2007 http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/attachments/nature-wildlife/44123d1183429822-morning-brooklyn-botanical-gardens-lotus2xx.jpg Here's the uncropped color version. To me a completely different mood and presentation. I have a 12 x 12 print of the B&W that looks stunning to me but I'd really appreciate your advice on how I can improve it. Thanks All! carylwithay Posted October 4, 2007 Share #7 Posted October 4, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) I like the black and white BUT if you really want to experiment and have fun why not intensify the black and white background and then put the color flower on it as a selective color image. I think it might be very effective. Caryl
jmr Posted October 4, 2007 Share #8 Posted October 4, 2007 Henry, a really gentle and subtle shot - works for me.
macos Posted October 4, 2007 Share #9 Posted October 4, 2007 Hi Henry, here's just a quick try. Of course it is a different crop, but the main thing is that the background gets darker without touching the luminosity of the blossom, although I am not trying to teach something. hsw Posted October 4, 2007 Author Share #10 Posted October 4, 2007 Marcus, I see your point. I don't remember what my settings were. Can you share how you accomplished your version? It certainly does stand out more and I would like to try to print this as well. John & Caryl thanks. I think I'll let my daughter try your idea in art class as they are starting to work with Photoshop at school. Best regards to all, Henry
macos Posted October 4, 2007 Share #11 Posted October 4, 2007 Henry, here's what I have done to your picture (as far as I remember): In the color version increase saturation for the greens to 60 and decrease lightness for greens to -70 (thanks to Andreas from the German forum). Then conversion via the channel mixer, blue 60, green 30, red 10. Following fine tuning according to taste, I applied exposure +3, increased highlights +8 and introduced an artificial vignetting (via lens correction). I know, the last is crazy, but sometimes I think it helps me to guide the eye to the main subject. Best regards Marcus
