I've been considering a M6 we have for sale at work, but wanted to get some opinions on it. It's in really nice condition, a few scratches here and there as you'd expect.

Two points of concern, though. The previous owner has blacked out the Leica lettering and the Leitz dot, not a huge deal but any suggestions how to restore the lettering?

In the second picture below, it shows some markings in the inside of the base plate. Is this likely to be just wear and tear, or could it be fungus or something else undesirable?

Dear Rob.,

I wouldn't touch it.  Don't get caught up in the current hype due to the reintroduced M6.  The M6 is the only camera I sold fairly promptly after buying it.  All other Leicas bought since my first in 1967 I still have.

Even though I have an M7, I don't understand the necessity for through the lens metering.

What film do you use?

I would pass. Between the inside bottom plate and possible corrosion on the film rails it may have had a "moist" life. That could degrade the circuit board and contacts for meter sensitivity on the back and shutter speed dials. Would have to be a real good price to allow for cost of possible needed repairs. At least expect a needed CLA, which isn't cheap.

I still use my 1985 M6 - which looks new compared to this one. I really like the M6 model, and use mine more than my M2,3,4,5.

I've been wanting an M6 or another MP since I had to sell an MP a couple of years ago. I've been holding out for the new M6, but the price is the same as a new MP here, and this happened to come up. No box, papers or anything, but it's well priced.

As far as film goes, I shoot Tri-X (gonna try tmax soon), Ilford Delta 3200 and Ektar 100 mainly

Everyone has an opinion about the best Leica. Like many of us, I find a built in meter very useful and like the M6 a lot. But I don't like the look of the residue in that one - I think I would also pass on it unless I had the opportunity to have it checked out by a trusted technician first and the price was really attractive.

Unless you shoot slide (transparency) film, IMHO you don't need a camera with through the lens metering.  All the above negative films have considerable exposure tolerance.  On my first trip to Europe in 1972 I relied on the exposure recommendations which came with a roll of slide film in those days.  I have never shot Delta 3200, but with the others I overexpose by two thirds of a stop.  Have fun.
