In 2021, I went alone for the OneChallenge to Athens (everything was booked and I needed a break). My winning shot was of the Acropolis taken on a Sinar F2 (a Leica company) with a Schneider Kreuzach 150/5.6 lens.I only took 6 shots in total, but used the full 2 hours.

I really should scan it one of these days and upload it :D:D:D

2010 in Venice was my first - I know that as I had started my new job in Novartis just 10 days earlier and took the risk that even if I was on probation, I was comfortable with my boss and team.

2012 was my next one in Copenhagen where my wife and little one also came.

Since then, I have only missed Wetzlar (and the long distance ones).

Hi Ravi,

Are you sure you didn't go to the One Challenge in Krakow in 2008?🤔  I have a memory of talking to you, or hearing you, on the phone in Robert's car on the way there and I think Brian Parkes was in the car too.  It might be a mis-reminiscence of course.  (I had been going to travel in the car too but had to cancel owing to unexpectedly being required to work despite having booked the time off.)

Pete.

Maybe - a friend from near here is looking for a dog sitter before deciding to come but she has had her vacation approved.

No I didnt go to Kraakow, and I doubt I called as I dont think I knew you that well. I went to a few meetings in Wetzlar. We did speak when you were on your way to Vienna as we were ordering food for you in an Indian restaurant and Robert had overshot the turning for the autobahn.

Yes I remember the call - and meal - in Vienna but the Krakow thing must have been a brain fart.

While we are thinking about Dubrovnik, which will be in less than four week's time now, I would like to raise a proposal for NEXT year's meeting.

As Pete pointed out a couple of pages back, next year will be the 20th anniversary of the original One Challenge. As a reminder (thanks Philippe), we have been to:

Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here…

London 2004 was held on 12th December, and there were 12 of us there. It was, as expected, dark, cold and a real "challenge" but it was still good fun and obviously lead to many happy trips over the years.  Philippe and I are the only two people who still regularly attend the challenges AND who attended the original London Challenge (IIRC - apologies if this is not the case!). Philippe flew from Nice specially that morning and returned home the same day.

I propose that we return to the scene of this first triumph, and hold a special anniversary One Challenge in London next year, and then carry on with new cities the following year.

I know exactly where we can meet for lunch!

I commend this proposal to the group :)

Excellent idea. I’m in. (We have to impose a handicap though on you and Philippe as you already know all the good spots 🤣)

  • andybarton changed the title to One Challenge 2023 - Saturday 14th October

My second big problem with London is the lack of conviviality and togetherness due to the very large size of the city that we will all be in hotels separated by many Kms.

My biggest problem of course is how much I hate London. Despise it. Loathe it. It gives me stress just thinking about flying into Heathrow, the Tube, the congestion of the pavements, the traffic ... arghhhhhhh.

Anyway, I will be staying at The Ampersand in South Ken.  For the lunch meeting, I nominate the Lebanais Comptoir near there. For sure my family will accompany me there. For a fee my daughter will model for you :D:D:D

I hear what you’re saying, Ravi, but a “London” meet wouldn’t extend from Beckenham to Harrow or Richmond to Hackney (unless you choose to head out that way :) ).

Communication around the wider city is excellent and there are some good value places to stay. Yes, you might need to get on a bus or in a taxi, but it’s not really any different from say, Rome or Istanbul.

We would meet in the west end, maybe near Soho or Chinatown. To be decided.

I also propose that we have lunch in a place like this.

You’ll love it 😊

Dear all,

last year in Athens covid caught us and this year we can not participate because of a family celebration unfortunately. Dagmar and myself are really sorry, however we wish everyone a great stay in Dubrovnik. Have fun!

Stay well and safe!

I do like a good pie and there is excellent food to be had in London, even if Gavroche is closing down.

I have enjoyed the meets in the smaller cities more than the larger congested ones (like Istanbul or Rome). Seville, Lyon, Venice, Vienna were great and it was easy to meet up with folk at a cafe between hotels. I prefer a walk (even if its a few Kms) to getting a bus or tram. It is also the reason I like the meetings in the Nederlands or Trier as each of those towns is small and easy to walk around.

Anyway, we shall vote. I recall someone mentioned Blackpool but the logistics of getting there without a car were not fun.

There are lots of places I would like to propose, but often they are not easy to get to (Genova, Turin, Padova, Verona, Colmar, Strasbourg, Fribourg, Tittisee, Heidelberg, Bordeaux, Hanover, Bilbao, Porto, ...). Dubrovnik almost put me off looking at the logistics by the fact the local airport reduces services at end of Sept.

I was at the first One Challenge in London - remember it very well!

I went to the next ones in Amsterdam, Paris, Berlin, Karkow (my suggestion!), Malta, then missed until Copenhagen then Vienna and my last was Lisbon.

Unfortunately I can't join this year but it would be quite fitting to hold the 20th in London again, especially as the first was such a dark gloomy December day!

Looking forward to it already.

Sorry for the nitpicking - wasn't the Melbourne Job in 2017?

Last time in London I stayed in The Grosvenor Hotel, which is part of the Victoria train station. It has my full recommendation.

Stefan

Yes, Melbourne was in 2017.

The Grosvenor Hotel has changed its name to the Clermont Hotel.

Pete.
