This recording appeals to me a lot. I find the B&W representation very successful.
Only...it's a bit too perfect on average. Jetty and boat both in the middle. Is there another shot or cut where the boat is more to the right or left of the jetty?
I could imagine if the boat drove into the picture from the right, it would remind me a lot of Kaspar David Friedrich and the pictures he drew.

That's really interesting feedback and something I never considered. I definitely took a lot of frames with the boat to the right while I waited for it to move to the middle. The boat was very slow. You just gave me a weekend project to take another look at those other frames. Thank you for the feedback @M Street Photographer!

Santa Rosa, California, USA. M10M, Summaron 28mm (cropped ~35mm)

This is awesome.
How do you like the 28mm Summaron? Considering replacing for 28mm Elmarit ASPH for it for the more vintage and less digital sharp look. But of course I will loose two stops of light, which might prove to be a lot. Thoughts?

If you are using a digital camera, just up the ISO. It will add to 'the look'!

Thanks. But you wouldnt go for Summaron over Elmarit?

I did that and the Summaron is a sweet little lens but ultimately I felt too disadvantaged by the f5. 6 maximum aperture. I sold it and moved on to the 28 Summicron. Without a shade, the 28 Elmarit isn't really that much bigger than the Summaron.

I should also mention that the focus lock button on the Summaron drove me nuts and was very difficult to hold while focusing. FWIW, I'd recommend sticking with the Elmarit.

I like this image a lot just as presented. The pier draws my eyes right to the boat, which I'm sure was your intention. It would also work with the boat to the right, but I think it's better as is.

I have the 28 Summaron remake and the current version 28 Elmarit. Both are great lenses. I swap between the two and I keep trying to convince myself I should sell one of them. I just can't do it. If I sold the Elmarit it would be to pick up a Summicron 28 for better low light with film.

What I love about the Summaron:

  • The vignette at F5.6 and even F8 combined with the very high center sharpness. It really makes for beautiful and unique shots. Personally I don't feel this lens renders all that vintage. At least not in that "Leica glow" sort of way you read about on this forum. It's very sharp to my eye.
  • I especially love this lens on the M10M, but I do use it with film and color bodies too.

What I dislike about the Summaron:

  • Slower to focus than the Elmarit. It's really difficult to beat the Elmarit's focus tab design for speed. I much prefer focus tabs over any other option.
  • 34mm filter size is difficult to find. Not a huge deal as you can always use step down rings, but then you can't use the hood.
  • At minimum focus I end up seeing my fingers in the viewfinder with the Summaron. Again not a huge deal, but definitely a win for the Elmarit and encourages zone focusing with the Summaron.
  • 2 stops of light is huge for film cameras. Not so much a big deal for digital color cameras if you are OK with high ISO. A big reason I switch to the Elmarit is when I know I'll need those 2 extra stops. The only time I use the Summaron indoors is with the M10M.

Every single downside is not a big deal for me compared to the benefits (the rendering). Feel free to ask any other questions about it. I encourage everyone to try out this lens.

Why not? They are completely different in the way they 'draw'. You either appreciate, and want, the Summaron or you don't. If you want a sound modern lens, go for the Elmarit, or save some money and get a Voigtlander with same IQ.

We must stop here, we are highjacking the thread of a magnificent image. There is a 28mm Summaron thread.

Superb image!  Did you add back some vignette after the crop?

Nope! I add zero vignetting with this lens. Never. It's one of features I love the most about the Summaron 28. I did add a bit of grain, but only because photos with the M10M are just too perfect for me.

Thank you so much. Really good and detailed description. I have also considered the 28mm Summicron ASPH V1, as some say it renders a bit more “gentle” than the elmarit asph.
I dont want too much digital sharpness/perfection, a bit of a contradiction, since I only shoot digital and not film - but I simply cant find the time for developing and scanning.
