My M10R has 6 months left on the warranty. 85% of the time, when I push the shutter button, it fires. 15% of the time, it does not. I have to retry sometimes several times, and finally it shoots. Background is Leica R4-R6, M6’s, M9’s with dirty sensors, and now this- I’m not new to Leica.
I’ve sent it back twice for repairs and it hasn’t been fixed. I need your advice. It costs a lot to ship it each time because of insurance. Should I just accept a camera that works 85% of the time? How do I get to Leica Germany?
When it does shoot, it’s wonderful! I’d just love to have 100% confidence that I won’t miss my shot because the shutter fails.

is that too much to expect?

No not too much to expect that an M has 100% confidence.

Two suggestions :

- if you have nearby Leica Shop or Store, or where you bought your M10-R, just go talk to the agency

- sell this camera ( don't forget to mention the problem ), buy another one

Best suggestion take it to a Leica dealer, or specialist.  They should be able to recommend a solution, probably a return to Wetzlar, or local repair specialist.
Do you have a shutter release cable? Does it work 100% with that. If not you’ve probably got a faulty shutter release mechanism.

EDIT: Forgot to say, if it’s still under warranty send it back to Leica and get a warranty repair/fix. Leica should cover shipping and repair.

This is not acceptable, I noticed this on my M10-R also.  The shutter button feels mushy, not the usual firm mechanical feel.   I have had good results when I contact Leica Germany directly via email and inquire.   Request a shipping label from Leica, they will provide it.  If you use a shutter button, remove it to see if it’s part of the issue.  You shouldn’t have to sell your camera for this simple matter.

Thank you all for responding- took the shutter button off- that may be the issue

ive used buttons on my M6’s and Fuji’s, but if the M10R is just Leica quirky

i can live with that! Gonna head out and shoot- I’ll let you know!

again, thanks for insights/responding!

It should be. Maybe the Fuji has a longer thread on the shutter, than the Leica. My soft releases are the same for my Fujis and Leicas, and have given zero issues.

Happy you’ve solved your issue though.

UPDATE!  Took of the shutter release button and thought all was well. Did a shoot with a model and had one stutter- it failed to fire, lost a moment

David Hild and Kathy Carbone suggested I send it in and sent prepaid UPS label!  Bless them

This is third try- hope it gets fixed- but again, thank you all for the input-

The pics are amazing- I'll post some on the proper site if I am able!

Hope it gets fixed for good, sorry for being ignorant, is your m10r a black paint or regular?

I made the mistake of putting a soft shutter release on my M10R that was supposed to work for Leica and it missed firing all the time. I noticed it immediately. I took it off. I had 2 and threw them in the trash.

You're not by any chance using a 'softy', or whatever they're called which screw into the shutter release to give you a smoother action? If so, try it without. I had the same problem some years ago with an M246 and suffered with it for over a year. Someone at a Leica meeting in Bristol advised me to try it without and I never had a problem after.

as ever- I love the camera, and hope it will function with a shutter button 100% of the time!!

I’ll keep you posted!

It won't.  Leica has a different internal thread so it will only work with a correct softie, not with a generic one.
But why should you want to use a softie - it induces camera shake. Leica M cameras have a collar around the shutter button which is designed for shakefree shutter release, when using the proper technique. Rest your relaxed index finger on the collar and you'll find that the slightest twitch will release the shutter. With a bit of practice it will be that you think: "now" and the image gets taken in a reflex.

@lanetomlane it’s already been removed, stated in a previous post.
