pics shot wide open a couple of days ago. This lens continues to be my favorite, yielding when wide open what I perceive as the "Leica look", achievable with no other lens other than the pre-asph version

Let me apologize in advance if what I’m going to say is cynical or unreasonable to someone.

Over the past a year or so I have been mulling over this lens. For couple of times I had in the shopping cart but I bailed out at the last step.

Now again I’m seriously thinking to purchase it especially a price increase of all Leica product is coming in the near future.

However every time I came back to this thread to affirm my decision one way or the other, I chickened out again. I was telling myself, oh man is this lens really this bad enough that people taking mediocre pictures but still feeling so good about them have the audacity to post them publicly as an obvious show-off?

This lens is really not that bad, it is definitely not as good as the original Steel Rim, specially the last batch 216, the golden coating.

This said, as much as I think Leica could have done a much better job with it, sadly they didn't.

In my opinion the design of this reissue should have been made exactly like the design of the original, with a 41mm filter thread, with and Ollux lens hood which would fit on the lens when a filter is attached to it and with a 70cm minimum focusing distance.

I have four 35mm Leica lenses, the Steel Rim Reissue is my favourite "modernish" 35 mil lens because it is so small. For the way I shoot, mostly at f/4 to f/5.6 on digital M and f/8 to f/11 on analog MP cameras, it is great.

It's main shortcoming for me is in its minimum focusing distance, this is why if I had to live with only one lens, the APO 35 M would be it because I can easily focus down to 70cm with it using the rangefinder for portraits.

I do think, in my experienced opinion, because I have a Summilux FLE, that the reissue has a much better rendering than the 35 Summilux FLE , both version 1 and 2 of the FLE. There is no contest in this area, and the Steel Rim Reissue is less expensive than an FLE.

The only lens I recommend against the 35 Steel Rim Reissue, if a person shoots mostly at f/4 to f/8 is the 35 Summicron V4, the KOB but if you like shooting into the light (Against the light) on a bright sunny day, the Steel Rim is a much better choice.

About the photos people share on this forum, Instagram and other platforms, not everyone is at the same level or has the same approach to photography. I don't think of photography as either bad or good, just different.

There is not wrong way to approach photography, to each his own. Plus I do appreciate different styles and approaches to photography. I have been doing this for 46 years, to this day I am still learning new approaches to photography.

If you'd be in Paris, I'd meet you for coffee so you could give it a spin for a few hours. But then again, while in Paris, you could also borrow one from a Leica Store for a day or two.

If you are serious about a Steel Rim Reissue and want to see another style of photography, which might be more in line with what you may be looking for in terms of sample images and photography. Photos made with a New Steel Rim Reissue and different Original Steel Rim lenses. I made a video, a rather long one, there was a lot to unpack, about the reissue versus the original Steel Rim.

In this video I shared more than 1500 different photos, showcasing a small part of the thousands of photos I made with it over the course of a year. Who knows, this video might just sell you on it.

It's on YouTube and here's the link below. I recommend watching this video on a big monitor, in 4K, to fully appreciate the photos.

I hope this video and photos shared in it helps you make up your mind about this lens.

It would be great to know what you think about the lens once you purchase it and use it or, it would be great to know why you decide not to get one as well.

Because I type faster than I think and it was a jumbled mess. Or is it that I think faster than I type? Huh, I forgot...

I, for one, would like to formally apologise to you for enjoying my hobby and enjoying my own mediocre pictures. I'm happy you weren't judgemental about it though!
