I finally purchased an SL2-S to use with my M glass (as an alternative to my M10-R). When I tried to put the Leica M to L adapter on the camera I really, really struggled. It was extremely tight or “stiff” so much so that I just gave up. The only way I could get the adapter on the body was to mount it to my 50lux first and then using the whole body of the lens for leverage turn until I hear the click. Is this normal with a new adapter? Will it break in and loosen up over time? I rented an SL2-S and adapter before buying my own and those were definitely not as difficult to attach as this one is. And I’ve tried taking it off and the mounting it again a few times and it doesn’t seem any easier.

No it is not normal and don't listen to people claiming that it will loosen up over time. Exerting too much force can only damage the helicoid of the adapter or that of the lens if you use it as leverage.

@lct Thanks for the quick reply. Yeah I figure something must be off since the M attaches to the adapter just fine. I’ve reached out to my Leica dealer - hopefully I can swap this one out for another pretty painlessly.

Funny. I had a similar experience. Wasn’t “too” tight but it seemed really tight. Noticed it sort of rubbed/scuffed the lens mount on the SL2S too. Then I noticed that the M side of the adapter itself had a scuff mark on it from my Summicron. Did you notice anything like that?

Just got my Leica M to L adapter and am having the exact same issue as the OP.  It takes an incredible amount of force to get it on and off the body…nothing at all like a lens mount. Is this defective or is it supposed to be different than mounting an SL lens?  Also, when I insert the adapter into the SL2S lens mount, one side isn’t flush unless I apply some pressure. Normal?

Try lubricating the adapter's bayonet with a very fine application of silicon gel lube or Vaseline ... not so much that you can see it ... paint it on the bayonet with a small brush and then wipe off with a tissue. The resultant residual lube film should enable easier attachment and the lube will not harm your lens - but avoid touching the contacts. There was a time when Leica recommended using a fine smear of Vaseline on lens bayonets to enable easy attachment.  Any metal to metal bayonet joint needs some very fine lube to enable easy attachment; even nose grease will work!   Who remembers the 'nose grease' remedy for scratched transparencies!

I guess you mean the bayonet. Only M lenses have a helicoid for actuating the focus roller arm.

On an L mount they won’t have a helicoid. What for?

Focusing all the way from close focus to infinity together with the focus ring of the lens. 7artisans LM-L close focus adapter on digital CL and Ultron 35/2 here at about 30cm MFD.

Whatever,  but what has that to do with a tight bayonet mount?

Those helicoids may be fragile. I have broken a VM-E close focus adapter already.

I bought a S/H M to L adapter for my SL2-S but didn't like it so I returned it, however my Leica R to L adapter is superb as well as my Metabones Nikon F to L is also very good fit.

I certainly wouldn't feel comfortable if my adapter was too tight to install onto the body.
