Notes for raw files:

- LPC is only supported by Adobe software

- LPC information (pitch and roll angles) are always stored in the DNG, regardless whether LPC is turned on or off. This means that you always can apply it or turn it off in post.

This is an important point, because when Perspective Control is turned ON, the histogram is disabled.  But, if you want to shoot with histogram, you can still turn on the perspective correction later, in Lightroom Classic.

did you read the list of changes?

I didn't find any of it in the list of changes. But some changes are so marginal that they are only summarized as "improvements". Therefore, I ask here whether someone has noticed such improvements.

Regarding:

NEW: The lens profile menu has been supplemented with additional focal length settings

Does this mean that IBIS will be applied to these new focal lengths (or is it purely for recording EXIF focal length data)? For example, previously if you were using a focal length that didn't have a Leica equivalent - i.e. Voigtlander 15mm or 40mm - IBIS for that focal length wasn't available. Now that you can dial in 15mm or 40mm is IBIS now applied?

Thanks.

yes, that is what it is for, especially when using the Leica M to L adapter and don't want any lens correction applied from a lens you didn't mount.

"The lens profile menu has been supplemented with additional focal length settings"

THANK YOU LEICA!

I adapt tons of lenses and having to guess which Leica lens profile is closest to the lens I'm adaptinghas always driven me nuts given that other brands allow you to manually set the focal length. Also sometimes I do not want the lens corrections applied.

Add the steps to adjusting the ISO values, and SL2s is pretty much the perfect camera for my needs now.

I updated mine today in my sl2 and sl2-s

all went well.  It also updated the lens firmware in my 75 and 35 summicrons.  Haven’t mounted my other sl lenses yet but I’m sure those will be updated also.

Robb, what's your plans for your Voigtlander 50/1.0 with the new firmware?

I guess I didn’t read that part.  How does the new firmware affect the use of the voigt 1.0 with the m to sl adapter?  Clue me in.  :)
I really like the Voigt!  It’s my only non- Leica lens for the system.  I’m not too worried if I lose exit data for some reason.  Ibis always worked previously as I selected Leica 1.0 as equiv lens.  Oem Leica adapter may have made this easier for me…

The new firmware allows for manual indexing of a non-Leica lens focal lengths to now have ibis. So you've found the Noct 1.0 setting with your Voigt 1.0 to be OK with RAWs then. No weird colors, vignetting, distortion corrections etc?

Thanks, Doug

Doug,  I have not had any issues with Raw’s with the voigt or zeiss I had previously.  I normally process in Lightroom classic and uncheck the lens profiles most of the time previously as I liked the native uncorrected look of all the lenses.  Everything looked fine with the Leica 1.0 setting in both color and b@w.  I actually like vignetting.  But I welcome the new lens indexing.  I’ll use the correct one moving forward.  And then will likely uncheck it again in LRC… lol

I haven’t needed to use any correction lens profiles on the SL lenses… just sayin.

I personnaly am very happy and quite amazed with the new perspective control of Firmware 5.

For years I have asked professional photographers about the real pros and cons in a given architectural picture between a shot with a tilt-and-shift lens and the perspective control in post-processing with guide lines, whether manual or automatic (like Lightroom, C1, PhotoLab and most others). I never got a clear answer. Moreover, the perspective corrections in post-processing are so obvious that  you need to use the "Aspect" cursor to give a more natural  look to the picture. This is the case when shooting high rise buildings like skycrappers or bell-towers of churches whose tops look exceedingly high when corrected in post-processing.

Leica corrected this problem at its very root : we take archiectural pictures by moving the angle of the camera. The SL2 measures this angle at the time you shoot, corrects the picture with this data. That's the clever "gimmick" if I may say. Congratulations to those who developed this new firmware.

I'm very glad to see that I no longer need to spend my money on a T-S Lens, which has no zoom, no automatic features, etc... I can do all that with the 24-90mm,  avoid switching lenses (and need to remove dust from my pictures) and relieve weight from my already too heavy bag !

Cheers

Gérard
