I now adhere to the theory (I don't know who put it forward) that this is just a replacement for the MP, allowing them to update components, materials, tooling and manufacturing processes, while also achieving lower costs. So nothing really new, but just updating the assembly line and extending the manufacturing lifespan.

I think this is just a usage of NOS- Parts from the M6 TTL. The M6 was a mass- procuced camera (for Leica conditions), The MP and its following siblings are produced in

relatively small numbers. So CNC- milling parts out of solid brass may be cheaper, than expensive tools for casting or forging.

Rinsing the “#filmisnotdead” message for almost a full month before dropping ‘just’ a limited release of just 500 doesn’t make much sense to me.   Especially at this price point and keeping in mind the very expensive Titan m-a dropped out of nowhere with 2 days notice and sold out instantly (as did many more MP special runs before it I assume)

So a prolonged marketing campaign for a limited release M6 seems pointless, unless there is something else. maybe we can hope for either :

1. A new feature in this edition that then gets rolled out to other cameras beyond this reissue

or

2. Two film cameras announced instead of just M6

#2 seems wishful thinking but the prolonged marketing campaign for an M6 at a ‘normal’ (versus MP) price does seem a bit odd

I agree, it would be strange to see them end it just there. I suspect that the 500 is just a trial run to see if there is any conviction in mass producing a less limited edition version etc. Wishful thinking of me maybe.

Perhaps I'm missing out on the point being made here(?) but there have been some very recent Leica M cameras made which feature the 'Leica' script and also the 'Leica Camera Wetzlar Germany' (although not the DPB GMBH bits) engraved on the top-plate;

That’s a digital camera so it is cheating squared:)

On the disappointment scale its up there with Nikon’s ‘its in my hands again’ campaign, which created excitement about a digital version of the FM.  They then released the hideously ugly and bloated Df.

Nikon did learn from the Df hype, they now have the ZFc in the lineup. It really is about the size of the FM series. The best thing about the Df was the ability to use legacy lenses, including non-Ai. I had a Df with some Ai-S lenses that had been chipped. Nice camera, great images but it still felt like carrying a bowling ball.

Here’s what I’ve surmised from the info so far:

The price for a Leica M6 in 1986 was $1695. Adjusted for inflation (USD), that comes to about $4580, or nearly exactly the same price as this rereleased M6.

The price for a new MP is $5695. For a new M-A $5595. So this is in fact, a cheaper Leica like the rumors suggested.

Leica has released limited runs of what became regular products to test the market before. They did the same with the M-A and plenty of lenses in the past. Releasing 500 now may be Leica guaging the market before they decide to bring it into regular production.

Leica I think has released this for a fair price. Anyone who truly thought a new M6 was going to cost anything less than $4k we’re reaching. Of course it would have been nice, but it’s unrealistic. But as of right now we don’t know what direction Leica is really going to head yet with all this. I say we should be happy they released anything at all, especially people who already own M6’s, as it means your camera will be getting support  for repairs a lot longer than what anyone would have though previously.

agree^^

also people should be happy that anyone anywhere releases a new film camera, need that to convince kodak to increase film production and bring down prices

500 cameras will “increase film production and bring down prices”?
