He was a a climber, writer and photographer covering from his native Scotland to the Himalayas. Looks like the locals keep his statue warm with his trademark red 'toorie'. (It is a little brighter if you click on the image - sometimes I find images here are more muted, lose their vibrance). With the beautiful rise in quality ISO of current cameras, a little slower lenses do not pose a problem of light.
