Try it in a different way. I downloaded this JPG and there's about 1 stop of exposure you can add in LR without blowing out the whites. You may have even more latitude with the DNG file. That immediately lightens the dog without making him look grey. Lift the shadows a little (+15) You can then use a local brush to kill the highlights on the snow. I'm happy to post the result of what I did if you would like me to.

No problem. I am the mistress of a black cat so have a lot of empathy for the problem.

I value your insight but just talk to anyone with a  very black dog. Here is one directly from The CL. I will appreciate any suggestions.

The problem: When you start post processing to show the dogs eyes and coat texture you lose their total blackness. Especially in  bright snowy light.

When our Labrador is photographed, she is pure black, with sometimes a brownness under light. This is nothing more than her genetic breeding. Don’t be afraid to get the paint brush out on lightroom. Also, use a lastolite white balance reflector (UK) or a Whibal (US) from B & H . Finally in late low sun, crouch or lie on the snow to get the perfect, perfect black .

A 700 foot deep canyon separates Minneapolis and Saint Paul, Minnesota. This is photographed from The Minneapolis Side.

The bottom lands are completely wild. Great playground for animals and people. 35mm 1.4

Great photo! Thanks. And, I'm really impressed at how you pushed this kit to the limits of its speed and ISO and kept the outcome so attractive.

Just been thinking about this-careful !  If you can photograph in snow near trees, the trees help break up the direct sunlight on the subject, would help the camera read the white balance on auto, and offer a background. Still, the archetypal best approach is low late sun, and practically lying flat on the ground. You can have the sun from any direction, but to get perfect tones to the black coat you must be relatively below the subject (maybe wearing a long ‘Canada Goose’ overcoat !! )

Thank you! The CL has a great sensor and the noise is fairly easy to handle in LR without any significant loss of detail.

The trick at higher ISOs (as you know) is to not underexpose and to get as much light in as you can without blowing the significant highlights; I actually dropped the exposure on this by half a stop or more in post. Fortunately with an UWA lens like this it's perfectly feasible to get a reasonably sharp shot at 1/25th. I sorely miss the IS of the Olympus EM1 when I'm doing shots like this. with that camera I could have easily hand-held this at 1/5th and that was the Mk1, it has improved since then.

Snap! Taken at about 8pm last night and posted on FB. I called it "Swinging in the rain".
I like yours better.

How funny. I work down the road at Euston and frankly it was seeing your posts from here a couple of weeks ago that reminded me it was time to go back for another shoot. I left work early and was done and on my way home by just after 1800. This  was my last shot of the session. I really like this shot with someone sitting on the swing and the deep black of the night. It's different and equally appealing 🙂

I was at the Deutsche Boerse  Photography Exhibition and was wandering back. I hadn't been particularly inspired by what I'd seen, so went looking for something of my own (😏). This whole area is good for street and building shots.

Making your own art is usually more fun. I can remember not that long ago when you would barely have walked around here during the day let alone at night. The regeneration has been spectacular. I'm planning to visit the new conversion at Coal Drops Yard sometime soon, have you been?

Here's my 'just for fun' pano - 4 shots with the 11-23 at 11mm handheld. It really needs 2 or even 3 rows and a tripod rather than the single row I did so I had to stitch it to a spherical projection. Still it's fun and lovely to have a view of the whole roof span.

You do know that the CL has an effective Panorama function, don’t you?

I'm embarrassed to say 'no'. And I've never bothered to use an in-camera panorama feature but I'm tempted to try now that you mention it. I suppose I'll have to read the manual <sigh> Thanks.

Last night I wandered up to Coal Drops Yard but didn't look around - I was trying to find a better spot to shoot the cranes (that you got in your frame).

I've used the panorama on the CL, but haven't thought to try it since I got the 11-23

Yes, I can handhold the Q easily at 1/5 second or even slower as well. And with the f/1.7 lens, I feel as if light is almost not a consideration.

I don't need to be tempted....😅
