I confess for being a "tech dinosaur".  Does M11 come with a built-in profile that I can use in LR6.  I rather stay with LR6 without incurring additional cost as long as I can process the DNG files from M11.

You can process the M11 files in LR6 like I do. There's an M11 profile, just no Adobe profile for the M11.

I suspect you might be able to push the M11 files at higher isos better on a software that supports the M11. I've seen a bit more magenta shadows at isos above 6400 in my LR6, but I've worked around it by adjusting the magenta/purple slider. This might be the case even with a software which supports the M11 (I wouldn't know).

I don't edit my pictures often enough to justify getting on a subscription because I shoot sparingly and edit batches of pics at a time...but as others mentioned subscriptions to the current LR aren't too expensive in the grand scheme of things so I might get on it at some point. I don't think what software to edit the M11 pics on should make or break your decision to buy an M11 since the cost of the software is relatively low compared to the cost of the camera (though a consideration nonetheless). The focus should be on the other features of the M11 vs M9/M10 etc. You can always process the pics on LR6 anyway/in the meantime.

I currently have LR6 classic residing on my "old PC" with Windows 7. Opted not to migrate to later versions of LR as I am not prepared to pay monthly subscription on Cloud. Photos are stored in an external hard drive (it is further backed up to another hard drive). Can pictures by stored in an external hard drive in Capture One?

I do have a second PC with Windows 10 and I can have Capture One installed on this PC if necessary. I do not know much about Capture One, but will explore this software on the internet.

LR Classic, the replacement for LR6 (now with many added controls and benefits), does NOT require cloud storage. I continue to use external drives.  The confusion came from its original name, LR Cloud Classic.  Now it’s just called LR Classic (and comes with a small amount of optional cloud storage space, which can be ignored). The other plan, using cloud storage, is now called LR CC.

For me, LR Classic is a no-brainer… one gets far more features than LR6 (especially long awaited local controls, masks, etc) AND Photoshop is included under the Photographer Plan, all for 10 bucks a month.  I used to spend as much on upgrades, which are now seamless, and far less than I spent in darkroom days. Biggest bang for the buck considering all my other photo costs. The plan can be cancelled at any time (perhaps if cloud storage is ever mandated).

rangefinder is very nice. feels larger than M9 but maybe is illusion.

Not an illusion. Leica redesigned the RF/VF for digital Ms starting with the original M10 (2017).

- Higher magnification (0.73x, vs. 0.68x in the M typ 240/262/246, M9, M8, etc). Also a function of the reduced thickness of the M10/M11 (the viewfinder is now a shorter tunnel to look through)

- larger eyepiece, and main viewfinder window on the front. Downside: one has to buy new eyepiece diopters, or at least an adapter to use the old film/pre-M10 diopters.

- also (but not as obvious to the eye) the new RF mechanism is supposedly more robust and less prone to getting out of calibration, and if it does need adjustment, that can now be done with a standard 2mm hex-key/Allen-wrench, for both infinity and vertical alignment.

you can just download one of the DNG and try it.

you can also use LR for storing your images and use C1 just for conversion. that's what I do at the moment.

Thank you all for your valuable inputs. I have decided and placed an order for a M11 (Silver).

Still using LR6 on an old PC with Windows 7. I do have a new PC with Windows 11. As I understand, LR is subscription-based now (which is not my preference).

I am not able to transfer LR6 to a PC with Windows 11.  If I have to replace LR6, I will consider Capture One.

As I understand, Capture One is currently used by some M11 owners; please share your thoughts and opinions on Capture One.

Post #22.  You just bought a new computer and a $9k camera, but are resistant to spending $120 a year to get both LR and Photoshop, neither of which require cloud storage?  These latest versions will also support all new Leica camera and lens profiles.  Capture One is a fine product, too, and also has subscription options and/or upgrade costs.

I like Capture One. I buy a one off licence rather than subscription, giving me the choice of whether/when to upgrade to a newer version. Like most here, I maintain my photographs in a separate folder structure to which I point C1 to create its library. That way if I change software, I can just point it at my existing folders of images (accepting that adjustments won’t transfer unless I’ve baked them in by saving it as a TIF file)

I use about 1% of C1’s capabilities. I import the files and for those I want to keep I start by pressing the auto adjust button and then the auto RGB curve adjustment button. That gets me to about 90% of where I want to be. I then twiddle with the sliders for Exposure, Highlights, Shadows, Whites and Blacks to get closer to the finished version. Maybe a small amount of Clarity, Structure and Dehaze. I want most of my images to be black and white so often I don’t use the last three and instead edit the image in Silver FX Pro.

C1 do a lot of videos and webinars to show what it can do with layers etc. I don’t use those capabilities though.

Just trying to be careful as how I spend my $ on photography but thanks for the reminder, I do appreciate.

Having used LR3 and then LR6, I am biased, and inclined to continue with LR. However, I am very confused with product range of LR.

I would very much like to continue with storage of photos on my external HD even if it is subscription-based. Does LR Classic allows that?

I consider myself a conservative user and may not utilize the full capabilities of C1.

Yes, Lightroom Classic (LrC) works mainly with the external HD, and so does Photoshop. IMO, Adobe's best features continue to be added to the HD-based applications (LrC and ACR/PS).

you can get the official adobe M11 profile (dcp file) by converting an M11 DNG in adobe DNG converter, then opening the converted DNG in adobe DNG Profile editor app (both apps have mac and windows versions and are FOC) and extracting the adobe profile. You can do this with any camera.

Or if you go to this thread I did it already!

There was (is?) a bug with adobe and the M11 and lens corrections that they fixed (are fixing?) which might be a problem with pre-CC adobe products, they're definitely not fixing it in those versions!

C1 is way better than LR6, but CC LR/PS isn't so far behind/in front (delete as personally applicable) and for my 2 cents I'd use the one that I'm used to using! (which for me is LR, despite owning the latest C1 licence too)

My advice is to keep the M9 forever.  It is a unique camera and will never be duplicated...

Having said that, as somebody who has owned one of every generation of Leica's digital effort (m8, M9, M10, M11) the M11 is by far the best of them, worth the money.

You will love it.

I had planned to keep the M9. Last evening I used it with the Summicron 35mm f/2 Asph, shot indoor of family group, very pleased with it.

Just as an aside - do consider the M10-R.  In my opinion it's the high point of the digital M.  If you have a style of shooting based on years of experience with M9, the learning curve will not be steep and you'll be very happy with the files you get.  I've tried the M11 and, while I can see some of the benefits, they don't, for me, justify the complexity that Leica have embraced in trying to give metering off the sensor and some of the other whistles and bells.

I'd also agree with others - get Lightroom CC Classic.  It's essential.

Hi Jeff,

I am pretty much "educated" and settled with my concerns. Just to put the record right, I have been using LR legacy (LR 6 version) on my old PC with Windows 7.

I do have a new PC now, with Windows 10 and upgraded to Windows 11. Will eventually purchase LRC. Expecting to pick up the M11 soon and will used it for the time being with legacy LR.. This will give me time to familiarize myself with the new M-11 before jumping into LRC.

All good, and thank you everyone for your kind assistance.

Hi Chris,

I consider myself as "traditional" old fashion Leica user. I have considered the M 10-R too. However, I embrace the added features of M-11, which IMHO will further enhance the M series.

It is good to know that you are happy with the M10-R. FYI, I also own an M2 and love it. BTW, I recall seeing a Youtube feed with Queen E using an M, not sure if it was M3 or M2. Considering her age, it is likely an M3.
