DAG notes that those also fits M cameras, which is probably correct, but not generally applicable, it seems.

I just tried som generic plugs I use on my MDa (M4 era). They fit in my IIIF but not tightly and would easily fall out.

The original plugs in my M2 will not fit into my IIIF.

Just tried my MP plug & it fits perfectly in my IIIf - even snugger than in the MP itself

Hello Everybody,

All of the Leica "M" cameras released before the MDa had the proprietary Leitz flash socket, beginning with the M3. Which is the first M camera. This Leitz socket was an improvement over the PC (Prontor-Compur) socket. The MDa (1966) & the M4 (1967) began the use of the PC socket on M cameras. The PC socket is still in use today by many different camera makers.

Best Regards,

Michael

Technical improvements are not always successful in the market, and are a disadvantage if not compatible with the mainstream. Sony had many innovations that were technically better, but didn't sell well enough as they were incompatible with more open standards. Thus there were PC socket adapters for the M3 sockets, and Leitz realized the special sockets were not necessary. I noticed that when I selected my M4 over the still available M3 at the same price, as a friend who used M2s pointed out the difference.
