while I mostly use a 35 'cron  , I did have an Elmar-M 50 f2.8 on my MP which made for a really compact setup.  What I am asking is  'Is it safe to retract the modern Elmar-M 50mm while on the M11 Body???  '  I don't want the rear to hit anything or risk potential damage.   have you tried it??

Many thanks in advance for the help,

John

I don't have an M11 manual but it should say in there which lenses are compatible, and the Elmar has been ok with all other digital M cameras. But in any case I doubt your Elmar would be damaged if it did touch something.

It is probably not the Elmar he is worrying about  ;)

Correct !      I've found an M with a collapsed 50mm (without hood) slips into the pocket of a coat brilliantly !

The best camera on earth is the one with you when you need it !  ha ha

Excerpt from the M11 manual :

« Lenses with retractable tube must only be used with the tube extended, i.e. never attempt to retract the tube while the lens is attached to the camera. This does not apply for the current Makro-Elmar-M 90 f/4 model, as its tube will not retract into the camera itself and can therefore be used without restriction. »

I have both, use them both... No tears were dropped for either... A great combo!

AND no issues retracted or otherwise when adding or removing it!

Not to bother you guys, i know some of you like to live dangerously ;) but the bottom of the Elmar's tube sits very close to the roller cam and hitting the latter may not improve your RF accuracy... FWIW.

This is right - though the roller cam has always been at the same position (otherwise the rangefinder wouldn't work with different lenses for almost ninety years now...). It has been at the same position in the M6 and no Leica manual told you not to collaps the Elmar-M with an M6 - they introduced the lens together with the M6-J. The roller cam even has been at the same position in the Leica II and neither Barnack nor Berek gave any warnings not collaps a lens (and for them a lens usually was collapsible). One may try with any any screwmount or analog M-body and any lens:  you may feel the collision between the lenses ridge and the the roller cam with any of them. With a Summitar you can almost be sure that you feel it.  Just turn the lens a little bit and don't force it.

Though on the other hand: nobody is forced to collaps any lens. The times when cameras were carried in Mr. Barnack's vest pockets are certainly gone.

My M6J manual did not warn about any issue indeed but the bottom of the Elmar-M's tube (right) was yet slightly larger than that of the Elmar (left). No problem if the tube doesn't wobble i guess but i prefer using protections like the one below as a precaution. YMMV.

I have seen people use a robber band.. still looks like a noose..

At this point I would use one of the 50mm from voigtlander 1.5 small and light..

Double Gauss? Hardly a triplet then... Different beasts since 1948 or something ;). Rubber or plastic bands were advised by Leica in their leaflet for film CL from 1973 (attached).

Yes but that garbled advice is aimed for people who attempt to mount their lens at an angle. If you present the lens more or less square to the lens mount normal human dexterity will ensure it doesn't matter if it is extended or not. Leica are only trying to counter idiots.

Idiots including me. Just tried again on my M240. Problem is not when i mount the lens but when i retract the tube. It does not wobble much, just a little, but i sense that it touches something into the body. Don't ask me why or what i have no idea. I let you doing your own experience folks, enough done by me.

OK,   got my Elmar M    I can confirm , It collapses perfectly, doesnt touch anything inside and works perfectly making the M11 a fabulously compact setup AND produces stunning results .......ALL GOOD!

It is especially nice in matching chrome !

here you go.......:-
