I finally bit the bullet and ordered my first Leica, the Q2 Monochrome Reporter. I live in Oregon and love sand, surf, dunes, forests, fields, and all manner of nature.

I've been wanting a Q2 Monochrome for ages because I love B&W photography and I've heard it's an incredibly sturdy camera.

Are there any "essential" accessories I should consider for protection, accident prevention, and B&W nature photography? A UV filter, color filters, the thumb rest, extra grip, etc.

This is my first monochrome camera and I've mostly just heard about black and white filters as "must haves," B+W coming across as very popular.

Thanks!

Colour filters are essential for your intended use. I would start with an orange filter. I would suggest for the rest that you start by using the camera as-is. You’ll soon find out what else is useful for you. For protection I would avoid a UV filter A dedicated protective filter is superior. But you might find out that you have a yellow filter on most of the time. Handgrips, thumbrests, cases, all that stuff is a matter of personal preference.

Actually it's Match Technical brand :)

Op/tech has a hood hat  - the  mini, which is about 3" diameter

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000AC924/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o06_s01?ie=UTF8&th=1

it fits somewhat firmly on the Q with (oem) hood on; meaning might come off while walking on the street, letting the camera dangling of the strap.....

There is no safety lanyard, although one can make or adapt one easily - it's only $8; you will need to lose 6 before becoming more expensive than the MT.

screen protector is not really needed

thumbs-up is a personal preference, but useful - similar to any side grip

arca-swiss L bracket or plate - only if you do night exposures

cases - sacrilege with the reporter model :)

batteries - one or two extra; the nitecore charger works well( not 100% charge), but then you need a suitable power bank

and if you get two batteries, splurge on the LeibFritz  case (made for the SL but same battery size)

check the threads for cases and straps if you want to go nuts :) - handstraps come in hand too (pun intended)

sd cards - ofcourse get one extra

There - I think I covered most - now start posting pics :D

I've definitely been considering some kind of cover. I'm putting together a shopping list before ordering anything, debating about SD cards as well. It seems like a second battery will be a must eventually. I've read it can get over 300 pictures now where it used to be 275?

One vote for the Op Tec Hood Hat.  RRS makes fine gear (and isn’t shy about charging for it) but I’m not buying anymore of their gear for other reasons.
The Hood Hat and a thumb grip along with a spare battery and SD card are my must haves.

Completely loving the paracord strap made by a nice gentleman from Ukraine. Ookli Straps on Etsy.

I absolutely want a paracord strap! I'm not seeing something like this when searching for Ookli Straps on Etsy sadly.

Do you like the OEM hood? I was looking at the 49mm Orange B+W filter, but I've seen some bigger hoods with built in filter spots that might take something different. Again, this is from a physical protection first viewpoint.

I do like the OEM hood but I felt that it might be easily lost by a unlucky bump in a  crowd.  It is also a bit rigid for stashing in a back pocket in a hurry.
The neoprene of the Hood Hat will probably be superior for protection imo.

My mistake on the strap maker.  He was great to work with and made one for me with PD anchors.

it's nice but not practical outside the bag - at least for me; so I just stored it away and rather use a lens cap and the neoprene hood cover(op/tech)

The lens shade it's ok, but found that a smaller lens cap does fares better for removal - I am using a center-pinch 46mm instead.

Lim's has a larger hood, but was not fitting properly in my camera and ended selling it

The hood?   I can see losing the hood/lens cap, but not the hood itself.

On my Q the lens cap is only on the camera when it is in a camera bag or case.   The cap stays in the bag when the camera comes out to play.

Right - the hood ain’t going anywhere.  I meant the cap. :)

I love the hood and am not using filters on the Q2.  I suppose that would be different if it were a Q2M

Use a ventilated hood - much easier to change filters, which is more important on a Monochrom camera.  Overgaard's hood is good but expensive and there have been supply problems reported on this forum.  I leave a yellow filter on for most of the time and never bother with a lens cap - just personal choice.  As @jaapv said, you should buy an orange filter as well.

Thumb grip is useful - I bought the Leica branded model, but Match Technical is also good.  A couple of extra batteries and the LeibFritz battery box is good, but depends where you live.  You're fine in the US, as Leica Miami have stock but far too expensive to ship to the UK, and when I tried to buy one direct from Germany I never received a reply. 😕

Don't buy a case - sacrilege for the Reporter edition - but do buy fast SD cards 300 mb/s, Sandisk or Angel Bird.

I use a hand strap from Harry Benz, but the Paracord is also nice.

That's it - then go and take photos - it's a great camera!

Don't add too much stuff to the camera. A wrist strap, a couple of coloured filters and you're all set.

Putting the Q2 in a case is like having a bath with your socks on.

  • 1 month later...

That's what have for my style of landscape photography

  • Hand grip for comfotable holding
  • thumb grip for more comfortable and safe holding
  • finger loop for make it impossible to drop the camera even while walking while holding the camera
  • a sturdy neck strap if you like that (what I hate)
  • a small umbrella to protect the camera from rain while using her
  • a cloth to dry the camera if she should get accidentally wet
  • a lens cloth
  • a well padded pouch to store the camera while not in use, a cheap camera bag does the trick too
  • a watertight backpack or sling bag for long walks/hikes, sling bags have the advantage to pull out the camera without taking off the backpack
  • screw-on filters for BW if you think that they are necessary ( I don't have them as I shoot in color)
  • a light tripod if you think you will need it
  • the ELP52 macro screw-on lens for some macro work
  • a charged spare battery if you usually shoot more than 150 photos before you are able to recharge
  • a better lens cap if yours comes off too easy as most doe, or use the gaffer tape trick to have a tighter seat for the original one

Thats what I have for my Q2, the only thing I rarely miss is a Leica strobe/flash for fill-in illumination

Chris
