The dress rehearsal of Ionescu's play Exit The King, a surreal examination of how we approach death: a peaceful, but certain death in an accelerated old age. A student performance at Corpus College Playroom, in Cambridge a few weeks ago.

I don't think I ever posted pictures from this show from last year. It's from a project where professional dancers worked with people of all ages from a small town to put on a big modern dance show. These are pictures of the amateur cast.

From a dance performance in Genk during the Corona period. With sufficient distancing and ventilation some things were possible again and the performers really needed our support!

I've just been through all my photographs from plays, musicals and dance in 2023 and selected one from each to put as an album on Facebook. I discovered a few that haven't been posted here already.

This is from a student production of The Complete Works Of William Shakespeare, a slapstick performance that runs for a bit over an hour. This was a scene that summarised the English historical plays (i.e. fighting for the crown). Slapstick by amateurs can be tedious, but this was professionally slick, fast and hilarious.

From The Almighty Sometimes, a play about a young woman, a writer and a misfit, who discovers that her mother has kept her on drugs since she was a child to subdue the effects of bipolar disorder - a treatment that also suppressed her writing talents. Choosing to take herself off the drugs, she finds the resurgent mental health issues too hard to handle. The lead actor (here on the left) was mesmerising.

Publicity shot for 'Little Wars' by Steven Carl McCasland. The cast include Agatha Christie, Lilian Hellman, Alice B Toklas, Dorothy Parker and Gertrude Stein. To be performed in September.
This shot was a total bu&&3r. If I got the right expressions, one of them would be blocking another, or casting a shadow.

Visiting your great thread, I found that I missed out on great shots. The one above is truly the essence of theatre photography. Thanks!!

Dress rehearsal for the musical Lucky Stiff, about a shoe salesman who has to take the corpse of his murdered uncle to Monte Carlo to inherit his millions. It's very much funnier than it sounds.

Dress rehearsal for Shakespeare's The Tempest. They went for the magic mushroom vibe. I kept myself and my camera well away from the make-up room.

Stunning work, as always! The close ups of the painted faces are intense.

Thank you! That 90-280 lens is heavy but every time I see the results I am amazed. An Apo lens, with OIS and internal focusing (to keep the balance constant), makes a wonderful handheld combination with the SL2-S and IBIS in low light. I hardly ever miss getting sharp focus on faces at long range.

Dress rehearsals for Songs For A New World by Jason Robert Brown, a musical which is nothing more than a sequence of belt-out songs about choices and turning points. It's none the worse for lack of a story, as the music is good and in this production there are some enormously talented (student) performers.

All taken with the SL2-S + 24-90SL or 90-280SL

Dress rehearsal for 5 Lesbians Eating A Quiche, a play I have seen before and found hilarious. It is 1956 and the members of the Susan B Anthony Anthony Society For The Sisters Of Gertrude Stein meet for their annual quiche-baking competition. The audience are cast as the members of the society; we are all 'widows'. During the judging the siren sounds for the start of nuclear war; in the excitement they all come out as lesbians (including the audience), except for one, who is pregnant. Although the meeting is held in a room that has been built as a bunker, and they cannot emerge for four years, fortunately they will be able to repopulate the world, assuming the new baby is a boy.
All taken with SL2-S and 24-90SL (perhaps one or two with the Summilux-M 75).

The play is just an excuse for the costume designers.

From Constellation Street, a play consisting of four half-hour monologues by characters telling different aspects of their night in Cardiff: a bar woman, a taxi driver, a teacher and a street girl. All lost souls in their own way, but their stories are linked by a common thread - their separate encounters with the girl.

Some barely lit scenes from Candle to the Sun by Tennessee Williams in a production by amateuer actors. It's times like these where I can't praise the SL2-S enough. It produces great images even with a relatively slow f/2 lens.
