Antigone - Play by Sophocles

Back when I was in college (and for a while after) I shot a lot of theater. I wanted to be the next "Martha Swope". For those who don't know (most I would imagine) she was "the" Broadway photographer. Look back on any official photos of a B'way show in the 70's and 80's and it was almost definitely taken by her.

This was very likely shot on Ektachrome Tungsten 160

Antigone is a great play but something only a college theater dept would put on.

Lovely shot, showing the whole performance, not just the individual.

By coincidence, there were two performances at the Edinburgh Festival fringe last week based on Antigone. There was 'Antigone: the Musical', which used some of the words, added a soundtrack and made a happy ending!!! (Creon repented and became a good king, Antigone was saved from death and they all lived happily ever after). It was well done as far as it went, performed well, but left few memories (I may have misreported their exact ending).

Then there was 'Antigone: Interrupted' a dance performance by the extraordinary French performer, Solene Weihnachter, who chatted with us, the audience, throughout, also using words from the play, putting us in the place of the Greek chorus. Some of the photographs used in publicity for a previous performance were taken by Maria Falconer, perhaps the best dance photographer in the UK at the moment - I'm waiting for a chance to go on one of her workshops.

I'm also waiting for some students here to put on the original so I can see what it is really like! I wonder if the themes of speaking truth fearlessly to tyrannical power, and the conflict between the laws of man and the laws of the gods speak to the present day - though they probably speak to most periods in history

Thanks. Very interesting about those interpretations of Antigone. I looked at the link you included.  Now I have to go back and read the play again, it's been a long time. I just happened to find this box of chromes when looking though some of my old stuff.

Another one from my College days.

The play is "The Woods" an early play by David Mamet though when we did it, it was already almost 10 years old.

They must have had a big budget because they built a full cabin on the stage. And, they had it rain too. You can see the water on the porch.

The actress is Melissa Smith. I looked her up and it turns out she recently died. She did a lot of B'way. Her last film role was in Nomadland from a few years back.

Publicity shots for 'Alice Through the Looking Glass' an adapted play. These two are supposed to be looking-glass image Alices. They are giving the play a different sort of vibe to the normal innocent fable.
SL2-S + 24-90SL. I was sitting atop a step ladder.

Thanks for the invite to this thread! Some loverly stuff here, really enjoyed going through it! I'm new to Leica, all my drama pictures would be from Sony at the moment. So for now I'll introduce myself with some concert shots and hope that's OK!

All images shot with the SL2S and the Sigma 85/1.4 DG DN

Rehearsals and performance of Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, a surrealist mash-up based on Hamlet, performed at the ADC Theatre. Cambridge, a couple of weeks ago.
All photos with the SL2-S and various SL lenses.

For those not familiar with the play, probability and coin-tossing are a big theme. This was my best attempt at catching coin tossing.
