Hi all!

I am a eyeglass wearer M shooter, and I am starting this post because I would love to know your experiences shooting with glasses with an M body. Let me explain myself better, I've recently discovered that with my glasses on ( i've never took them off, if not I can not see anything), I am not able to see the whole framelines in my M3 (0.91 magnificaiton). Actually I've never tried without glasses, but the other day I had film in my M2 body and I wanted to shoot some portraits with my 50 mm lens, so I put the 50mm into the M2 body and I was really pleased and surprised about seeing the entire framelines and a bit of out of frame without having to move my eye across the metal ring... true that the patch focus is not as precise as it is into a '0.91 mag BUT... with a bit of zone focusing that it's not something I am worried about

Also now, because of that, I am prefering shooting my 50mm lenses into an M2 body (0.72 in general I imagine), instead of the M3, is that 0.91 mag a viewfinder for non eyeglassed people? Am I the only one feeling a better experience shooting with glasses a 50mm lens into 0,72 mag VF? And same is happening now with the 35mm into my M2,.. feels I would love a 0.58 VF to shoot 35mm lenses, is that right?

Also, because of the M3, M2 metal ring I have destroyed my coating from my glasses,.... do you know where to find this rubber ring covers to protect the glasses?

Hello Cesc,

DAG is the place to find M accessories, in USA

https://www.dagcamera.com/store/c6/Leica_M.html

M3 was know as created for/with in mind 50mm M Leica.

For 35mm, the goggled type was for it, using the "50" frame lines with the framing of 35mm lens.

0.72 of M2 was created for using more 35mm.

Then the M line was offered for a while (too short) M7, MP, M6 TTL with 0.58, 0.72, 0.85 for every use.

I know some photographers with the three types of VF (film) to use at best his lenses line, even then with external VF for other lenses. wider than 28mm ...

Leica had chosen 0.85 to be able to put 35mm in the VF without goggled 35 M3 type(this can be used as is on every M, though).

For years I used nail polish of my wife on the metallic VF to safe my glasses.

Then I glued right size of plumbing rubber ring, not pretty but easy to find.

Finding right size and thickness (not too thick) of rubber ring and right glue is challenging.

I've used M cameras with my glasses since 1968. Back then I bought the new M4 instead of a new M3 because the VF worked better for me, and I do use 35mm as well as 50. I've picked up a couple of M3s since, and although I have no trouble seeing its full 50mm frame, I still prefer the .72 VF of the other models.

I've never scratched my glasses on an M eyepiece, but when I got the M3 I added the plastic eyepiece ring from DAG as a precaution. It's a good fit.

You are definitely not alone.  Largest comfortable frame lines for me are; 35mm on the 0.72 finder; 28mm on the 0.58 finder, and forget about the 0.85 and 0.91 finders, LOL.  I shoot with the M6, which is my favorite M film body.  I do shoot with a 28mm, but use a Voigtlander external finder.

mmm... I have to say that shooting the 0.91 with both eyes open it's magic! But with glasses I don't see the whole framing that's all!

It's possible to get comfortable shooting the 0.72 finder with both eyes open.  I forget to mention that the M6 has a non-metallic eyepiece to protect eyeglasses.

Yes, if I remember M6 was my firtst with plastic/rubber covered eyepiece.

Untill M4-P, this was metallic but if I use diopter, new ones have rubber protection same as the always falling "rubber ring" on magnifier x1.25, x1.4.

Cesc, to see the world as it is, nothing can be better than SBOOI 1:1 VF from Leitz.

Not scratching glasses 😇 ...with two eyes open wearing glasses

In spite of wearing eyeglasses for 66 years, I've never been concerned with seeing the frame lines on my Leicas, as they aren't exact anyway, only approximations. You can always move your eye around slightly if you need to see the lines, or as suggested above, external finders are much better. The plastic snapons from DAG do a good job of protecting the eyeglasses from scratches.

Sorry Cesc for your bank account.

SBOOI in sh is not expensive comparing to other Leitz/Leica naming.

Voigtlander 50 VF sibling costs even less.

...

As left eye M user,

side benefit of SBOOI was for me to be able to see the world with the one eye I want right or left eye or best the two 😀 with corrected eyeglasses !

oh! no no just joking! Actually I followed your advice about  : "the actual gear that I own is what I need, but you don't know yet... " hope you understand that part :)

Just correct me if I am wrong.

With an external VF, I have to prefocus (patch alignment in the M body VF) and then without moving the camera in DEPH, frame with the external VF right?

With practice, and knowing well the lens, I can "focus by feel" or feeling the focus tab/index.

With lenses like Elmar 3.5/50 or Anastigmat from "0 Replica", set at f/5.6 or less, no rangefinder needed.

Let's use Elmar as example:

when the tab is at 6 o'clock, I know the setting is 4m

at 5 o'clock, it's 2m-2.5m

etc.

I‘m farsighted and normally I wear strong glasses.

However when shooting with any of my Leica M I’m not wearing glasses (because of scratches and to avoid the distance that eliminates the outer frames).

Instead I equipped my M cameras with correction lenses. Works fine, like I would have never needed glasses.

The seller appears to be "away" currently, but I highly recommend these: https://www.etsy.com/listing/914190409/leica-m-rubber-eyepiece-cover-for-m234

$10 for two, and they fit perfectly on my M3 viewfinder ring. I have not tried any other options, such as DAGs offering but, frankly, I have no reason to. These work perfectly.
