The last two SL primes were released in the month of February.

The 35/2 in February 2019 and the 28/2 in February 2021. The 28, 24 and 21 were promised for 2020. Do we have to wait until February 2023/2025 for the next announcements, or are there any rumblings of something happening “soon”?   If not, I’ll order the Sigma 20/2 dg dn when it is available in March  and move on.

I have a source that has told me more than 1 SL lens will be released this year but who knows. There’s no guaranty in life.

As much as I like the Sigma i-series, I don’t think they’d be equivalent to an APO Summicron SL lens. Stopped down to around f/5.6 the Sigma primes are very sharp but shot wide open, the rendering is different and no where near as sharp as what you’ll get out of an APO SL prime.

Probably true in many cases. In Sean Reids very interesting test of L-mount 50mm lenses, one lens stood out: APO SL 2.0/50mm. It was best in most categories, but was beaten by one lens in corner sharpness. Which one? Sigma Art 1.4/50mm. The SL 1.4/50 is no better than the competition (Sigma and Panasonic). But overall: APO 2/50 SL is the nr. 1.

I agree - and had another hint. In Cameralabs the Sigma I 65mm was tested against the 50mm Art. The corners of the 50 were miles behind the 65mm. So we can hope that the 50mm Art for origin L-mount (in the moment the 50mm Art is HSM not DG DN) makes also a big jump forward in terms of corner sharpness.

The SL 50 1.4 might not be sharper than a sigma when examining 100% crops, but it sure as heck looks better in the overall end result.

Perhaps so, but this is not an opinion shared by all. I don`t own the Sigma lens so I have not tested. I owned the SL 1.4/50 and the Panasonic S 1.4/50, and after some testing I decided to keep the Panasonic. Optically it is in no way inferior, and the autofocus is better.

Interesting review. I guess that Sigma will offer an 1.4/50 DG DN in the not too distant future. I own the 1.4/85 DG DN which is a fantastic lens, but it needs software optimization. This is also the case for the Leica SL 1.4/50, but the APO SL Leica lenses seem to produce a perfect result with no need for optmization.

My 28 APO SL is pretty much flawless wide open and out to the extreme corners. My only complaint is that it’s doesn’t have a 24mm or 21mm focal length. 🤣

Not sure why people think the 28 APO is somehow inferior compared to other APO SL primes.

As Jono notes, distortion is probably corrected in software.  This is the way I interpreted the ‘needs optimization’ comment above.

Exactly. Don't get me wrong - the SL 28 is a fantastic  lens (like all SL Apo's), which I'm using extensively! But looking at the DNG's imported in LR you will notice LR's info, that a "correction profile" is embedded. Only the 3  Varios and the SL Summilux 50 have this correction profile embedded - and just now the first Apo Summicron  wide angle lens, the SL 28.  Will it be also the case regarding the upcoming super wide angle lenses 24/21? I suppose so!

If I remember correctly wide angle lenses need software correction due to their natural fov which leads to distortion. I'm obviously not a lens designer and folks feel free to correct me if I'm wrong but I thought it's inherit in focal lengths wider than 35mm

To the op I definitely can't wait to see the Leica 21 and 24. Hopefully the 24 can do close focus lol ala Fujifilm xf 16mm 1.4. Ok ignore me I'm just dreaming and trying to recreate my first love on the Leica system 😂

Weren't those SL lenses delayed for two years mainly because of a flue? Considering how World War Last just got started, I anticipate more delays and shortages.

It didn't stop other companies though. Why is Leica more affected than others? Sigma has released about 10 lenses in the last 24 months

Do you really want to know why?  Because of this guy in the video, he spent over forty minutes just polish that thing.  Can you imagine how much longer it took him to do his job, while having to wear a mask, follow new protocols, etc, etc,...?

And the rest of the world is not following similar protocols? Japan is still in semi lockdown for example

Do what I did, get the 24mm Summilux-M or the 24mm Elmar-M and be happy, those two are awesome lenses.  They will keep you happy until the APO shows up.
