So yes we are talking about Leica apsc and apsc alternatives, if any. Only if one is sensor-format centric, which most of us are not.

gotium Posted May 14, 2022 Share #966 Posted May 14, 2022 Looks like Canon is about to announce a new APS-C line, may be worth a look? Anyone like Nikon's Z7 series? Yes, much bigger than the CL, but nowhere near the heft of the SL line, and the lens lineup looks attractive.

nicci78 Posted May 15, 2022 Share #969 Posted May 15, 2022 Leica should pay attention. Only 3 long lasting DSLR mount : Nikon F, Pentax K and Canon EF. All three has in common native cross compatibility between APS-C and 24x36. Today Sony replicated the same formula with E/FE mount. Nikon did the same with Z mount. And Canon will ditch their “too small for full frame” EOS-M mount for APS-C RF cameras. L-mount alliance should pay attention. Long lasting mount may require a mount covering APS-C and 24x36 !! Panasonic has no easy upgrade path from m4/3 to full frame L-mount. Leica has it ! But prefer to ditch it ! Silly! Sigma should have launched APS-C Foveon L-mount camera first instead of waiting for über delayed full frame version. Fujifilm with its too small for full frame X-mount, will face difficulties to upgrade their customers from APS-C to small MF 33x44 Sony, Nikon and Canon will be in the best situation to dominate mirrorless. 3

The Canon EF mount is only 35 years old (even Leica R made it to 45 years - and was briefly a DSLR mount ) . And Canon ticked off their entire interchangeable-lens user base when they dumped the FL/FD mount. Only thing that saved them was that Nikon was behind the curve in AF technology. nicci78 Posted May 16, 2022 Share #971 Posted May 16, 2022 (edited) I am just talking about the digital age. Key of success is certainly the choice between APS-C and Full Frame. They complement each other. Edited May 16, 2022 by nicci78

Umm.. last time I looked the L mount worked with both my APS-C lenses and FF ones, and with cameras the same. You have me puzzled. There is nothing stopping any L mount alliance member offering one in the future either, and they possibly will - Panasonic appears to me to be the most likely candidate. jaapv Posted May 16, 2022 Share #974 Posted May 16, 2022 Panasonic already expressed doubts a few years ago. They may well enhance their video commitment for MFT and move into APS C for stills-oriented cameras. And they would be able to sell rebadged cameras to Leica. nicci78 Posted May 16, 2022 Share #975 Posted May 16, 2022 for marketing reasons, it will be impossible for Panasonic to launch APS-C cameras. Without alienating its m4/3 faithful crowd. It will look like killing m4/3 which is not a good sign.

Panasonic is heavily focused on video, not on stills. The only stills-oriented camera in Panasonic's lineup is the S1R, and that was not exaclty a success. The last iteration of the sensor was quite good at introduction. but not on the level of the CL and I doubt that there is much room for improvement left. If they stick with the format they will lose the quality race.
