I can only imagine what that battery life would look like if the M11 didn’t have to be in LV all the time. Please Leica give us the option to shoot meterless in full rangefinder mode without the need to have LV on (fingers crossed). I’d happily shoot Sunny F16 if that meant double the battery. And thank  you for the comparison, this was really useful to know:)

Leica said that the M11 is not in LV all the time. M11 uses a power-saving way to meter. I assume that the sensor is read only a couple of times a second instead of continuously.

HI There

I thought I would try and get a proper handle on the differences here, so

1. Fully charge battery

2. Switch off all power saving

3. Switch off screen (no EVF)

2. Take 50 photos

3. wait 30 minutes

4. take 50 photos

5 wait 30 minutes

6 Repeat until battery dies.

M10 lasted for 4 hours 10 minutes and I took 451 very boring photos

M11 lasted for 6. hours 30 minutes and I took 703 equally boring photos.

Noticeable that the M10 got quite a lot hotter than the M11

Is this useful? Probably not 😂

All the best

Jono

Thanks for taking the boring photos for us, Jono.

So the M11 will last a day just being awake and observant, shooting the odd snap for free.  The interesting question is whether the BTLE communications and WiFi for fast upload and for firmware updates are power pigs.  The wifi chip in the M11 appears to be new -- it wakes up in much less time than the M10s.  Some of this can be tested with current firmware, but this will get interesting when the March (or later) firmware upgrade rolls out some of the promised functions.

I don't understand all the knocking against LV regarding battery usage.  Leica wanted to give us more accurate metering through sensor-based metering, resulting in LV being constantly on.  Even with this new feature, Jono's tests show that the battery lasts 56% longer than the m10 battery and gives 55% (almost 56%) more shots.  Are people only going to be happy if the m11 gives 100% more usage time and shots vs the m10?  How many m10 batteries did people go through in a normal day of enthusiast shooting?  For normal days it seems that 1 m11 battery will do.  If you have a really busy day you can charge your battery during downtime to stretch your 1 battery.  Professionals using the m11 for work like weddings will need to have at least 2 batteries no matter what, and most likely at least 3 for redundancy.

I understand people complaining about the new metering because of the extra shutter lag (even though it is likely not noticeable in practice).  I can also understand those with the sentiment that the new shutter sound (closing and opening the shutter) is not desirable (like ring tones, its ok to like some sounds more than others), but for god's sake, please stop talking about the battery drain from new metering system.  Leica gave us more shooting time and shots per battery, a lot more.  If you are traveling with the m11 you should always keep a 2nd battery with you anyway, just like you should always (or used to) carry a second memory card.  Batteries can fail/expire and you don't want to be caught on a trip without a 2nd battery.  If you do end up draining the first battery, pop the second one in.  It looks like only power users will go through more than 2 batteries in a day's worth of shooting.  2 m11 batteries gives you the same shooting time and shots as 3 m10 batteries.  Honestly everyone should start ending all their posts with "Thank you Leica for giving us 50% more shots with the m11!"

-Thank you Leica for giving us 50% more shots with the m11!

it's cool - I just like clicking the shutter 🤪

Can it be programmed to click? Then I can relax and drink bourbon for all 6 hours. 😁

BTW, several years ago I played with CDHK hack for Canon P&S cameras and loved programming capability. I know most users don’t want that but I would welcome that.
