Who will keep both the M10R/M10M and the new M11?

I was planning on keeping my M10R & M10M for a while after I got the M11 but then get rid of the M10s but the recent Porsche 911 thread got me thinking.  I got my 997.1 GT3 back in 2007 and still have it; will keep it as long as I can as it is lighter and smaller than the more recent 991 and 992 models which also include a lot of electronic "bloat."  Though I regret not getting the last of the air cooled 993 models, the 997 brought back the iconic raised front headlights which was removed in the 996 series.  Similarly, the M10 series seem to be the last of the Ms that have the classic metering off the shutter and inconvenient baseplate; I long ago adapted to the metering and changing of the battery and SD card.

Conversely, one of the main reasons I will get the M11 will be the new metering off the sensor but I feel that it is a stepping stone to a more finalized modern M in the future whatever that means.  It could include a more functional EVF system and IBIS.  Maybe a better iteration of the electronic shutter.  From reading the forum threads, color noise at lower ISOs which I do the majority of my photography is not significantly improved in the new model.  In that respect, I think I would keep the M10s for the more traditional process similar to my M9P and M9M which I enjoy shooting.  I would then start the new upgrade process with the M11 series, upgrading to whatever comes next.

My current thinking is that the M10-R is my definitive digital M. Shutter / IQ / file malleability / handling are more than sufficient for my needs and more than a match the lenses is us (28 Summicron asph, 35 Summicron asph, 50 Summilux asph and 135 APO-Telyt.  If I need whistles and bells for paid work or travel I have SL2 + zooms and primes and Q2.  I’m afraid my M is now a second fiddle and mainly used for personal projects when I want to slow things down…

I’ve never owned a Porsche, but I will keep both my M10M and M10R even though I have the M11.

My M10M is the best camera I’ve ever used. The M10R produces very nice colors and will be a fine backup (and I’m a sucker for black paint). It’s only been two weeks with the M11, but I think its color images are on another level.

Nice to know the colors are improved on the M11. Can you further clarify the “on another level” meaning?

Hard to describe, but here goes: Not sure if it’s the higher resolution or the color science (or both). To me, most of the images seem “smoother” without a loss of detail. Also, I’m finding it easier to get gentle pastel shades (of course, punching up the color and contrast in post is easy too).

It’s been only two weeks and I think there’s a lot more to explore in the M11’s files. (And maybe I will change my mind later!)

Hope this helps.

Edit: p.s. I did not see much difference between the M10R and M11 files at first and Reid’s analysis seems to confirm that. But I feel differently now.

That is good to know.  I am now very interested in getting my M11 and looking at the colors as well.  As the M11 files are more malleable, the colors may be able to be "adjusted" more to ones liking.  Hopefully this proves to be true in my case.  I just acquired the RNI films which serve to be a very useful starting point in getting the look that I like.  With the Topaz AI programs for sharpening and focus, I think I am set with Lightroom Classic in all my post processing needs.

I will second that.

I foolishly sold my M10M when the dealer called and said she was shipping my M11. I regreted that decision the moment I dropped it off at Fedex.  It is my favorite M ever. I will defiantly be buying another one soon.

I thought I was the only one who did things like that

I do like the M10r quite a bit, unique colors, very good pixel sharpness into the corners, great shuttersound.

on the otherside I plan to get the M11 , the exp metering is a big step forward for my style of photography. i believe it will make it possible to more often nail exposure with the first shot in difficult light situations.

I also like the new menues and the battery. And while I dont need 60 mp it doesnt hurt.

For some reason I feel the M10r is quite unique, and maybe the camera where I feel to have the closest personal connection. But still - if IngetbthebM11 it doesnt make much sense for me to keep the M10r. Why? 1. I dont need a M backup - once had 2 M8 bodies just to realize I only carry one at a time. And In have other camera if my M would have to go for repair.
2. simplicity - hatd enough to decide if I bring the M or SL2 or SL2-s or S or….I do not want to have to decide if I bring the M11 or M10r

3. Inwould bring the M11 anyways, and the M10r would collect dust ( my S006 , which I kept for the unique ccd collects dust because I only use S007, my tl2 collects dust because Inwould justbuse the cl,…)

4. A camera which collects dust is a poor camera, I want my M10r to be a camera which is used and not a collectors item. 5. I allready have a film M as a collectors item ( not sold as such, butbit doesnt see the light often enough)

5. but as strange as it is, having a hard time to give up the M10r, maybe it will take me some weeks !)

its just so good. But yes, I believe the M11 is a little better. It feels more modern and electronic though, and the M10r more classic. So Islightly prefer the feel of M10r, but know I do like the functionality of the M11 !)

6. mail problem: at the moment Ispend too much time reading and writing about cameras instead of using them more often 😭

In the not too distant future I think the M10 line will be viewed as the last of classic Leica M.  And the best of the classics too.  Same as the 993 is viewed as the pinnacle of the 911 classics.

Having used the M11 for a few days now I am unlikely to ever shoot daily with the M10 again. The colors of the M11, the metering, the low ISO and high shutter speed are all producing some nice photos I can hardly get from the M10 in tricky lighting. That by itself is motivation for me to pick up the M11 instead of the M10. And some of the new features are nice too, and I like the new black finish, and maybe even the reduced weight in lieu of brass.

But I have yet to bond with the M11 as I have with the M10-P. The shutter thing bugs me and I miss the baseplate. The feel is a little off. Call me weird. So yeah, I am thinking of trading my M10-P for an M10-R for when I feel like handling a classic. They just feel perfect, like the film MP and the 993.

+1

I sold my M(240) to get the M10M. I experience the joy I had with my film Ms.

My protector is always closed on the screen : had it been a M10M-D, it would have been even better :) (already discussed many times here)

I am tempted to get a M10R to complement my M10M, in order not to carry different batteries and chargers. But I just bought a Q2-R, so maybe I’ll wait a little bit…

In a long life I have been lucky, ( and foolish ), enough to own more or less +90 vehicles of varying sizes and makes in a couple of countries, I've never owned or wanted a Porsche despite having driven a few over the decades and despite owning other stupidly fast sports cars too...........But if I had to choose from all of them I'd love to own another Land Rover SWB Safari Series II again, the most fun and use I've had with any of the vehicles has been with a IIa. Common sense though intervenes as I'd never be able to negotiate a IIa through the narrow streets in this medieval town to get to my door and a Porsche too wouldn't like the cobbled streets much either I guess............A friend here recently bought a beautifully restored 1964 (?) Austin Healey 3000, only to find he can't get to his garage to tuck it away at home and he grounded the exhaust on the cobbles once or twice in trying,  he's well pissed off!

Anyway, a digression, sorry.......I could have bought a M11 but decided instead to buy a M10-R, that fits better with my existing M10-D and the M10-M and whether I will later buy a M11 I don't know, but I would have to have a serious "trial period" with one and I wouldn't buy until it's been out in the wild for at least a year. With what I have there's absolutely no pressing need to upgrade to the 11 at this time, maybe never.........But then, never say "never", right?

Have all three and planning to keep all three. M11 will get the most use followed by the M10M. I like having two colour M's. It's a habit I picked up when using them as working cameras. 50 on one and a 28 on the other plus a 90 in my bag or pocket.

2 charges, 2 sets of batteries to carry, different exp metering and menus. would nt a second M11 or a second M10r make life easier?

Yes. But I have the M10M, which I adore, so for now it's two sets of batteries anyway. But when the M11M and M11-P are released who knows? Currently I only have 1 M11 battery so the charger is still in the box until my spare and EVF arrive. USBC charging is convenient and easy.

Menus are no issue. I move between multiple cameras and systems and I adapt quickly. Wouldn't say no if Leica updated the M10R/M to the M11 menu structure though.

The only quibbles are the button swap on the left side of the screen and the fact I'm now waiting for my Mono to click when I turn it on......

My current plan is to hold off until an M11 black paint is released. Wish I had done the same with the M10R.

Do you still know in an instant which one to carry on a travel, a trip or a walk around the house? In your case I’d define the M9’s as traditional, make a hold at the M10R and wait until the M11 is flawless, in an M12 or somehow. I guess you’ll know a few Porsches that needed some maturation first 😊
