Survey: Would you buy an EVF only camera with an M mount?

473 members have voted

  1. 1. Should Leica make a manual focus EVF camera?

    • Absolutely. I'm second in line after Flash.
    • Never! It's the work of the Devil.
    • Hmmm? Not sure. I'd want to see it first.
    • I want one of each. M11 and this new wonder camera!
    • Not for me but I'd be happy if it exists.
    • Does it come in Monochrom?

We hear on a regular basis from Leica users that they would like an EVF-M for eyesight reasons, and they're constantly ignored or dismissed. That's insane considering that populations are aging worldwide.

Ironically, it was compromised eyesight (and now 'aging' at 59) that was a part of what got me into M rangefinders in the first place. Shooting for long hours with an SLR always made me feel like my eye was going to fall out of its socket, and same now with EVF's. I think sometimes poor eyesight is just a red herring for not really liking the rangefinder experience (which is perfectly ok) and not the inability of M's to focus quickly and well no matter one's eyesight. That said, Leica could step it up and finally make the eyepiece for the M adjustable, and other refinements. FTR I'm an eyeglass wearer and have no problems framing with the M.

Case in point.

There are many types of eyesight problems that influence people to prefer one type of viewfinder over another. I take my glasses off sometimes when using a 28mm, and I can still focus the rangefinder patch with my terrible nearsightedness and astigmatism!

Are you suggesting a replacement for the original visoflex except EVF instead of reflex? Now there's a thought.

And whilst on the subject if Leica resurrected the 5 bodyshell then there would be more room inside for everything to fit😊.

It was kind of a summary of all wishes expressed in this. thread ;)

Let's not forget the CL platform.  That platform could be altered to be the basis for a non-CL, EVF, AF, IBIS M-type platform.  🤗  It would make far more sense to repurpose the CL platform and technology than to eliminate it and configure a new platform for a M body with EVF & IBIS.

Another customer bug-bear: APS-C is inferior. 🙄

You should use your cellphone, Jaap.

I’d have to say I’m mystified by the idea of an L mount in an MEVF.

First, Leica would then need to include AF, video etc etc - so it would just be an SL in an M form factor.  That’s fine, but it’s not the discussion.  While I can see Leica changing the form factor of the SL, I don’t really understand why they would.  There are a whole string of issues with the SL, including lens size, heat management and battery size, which have lead Leica to that form factor.  It might be possible if they reduced the sensor size to APS-C.  The great saving in such a camera is that they already have done most of the work.  It would be a CL-2 …

Second, what would such a camera do to the SL sales?

The point, and the only point, is that there is a very small gap in Leica’s line up - an M camera, with the EVF built in.  Brave?  Not really.  The Monochrom was brave, as was the M60/M-D/M10-D.  What is interesting is that those were decisions made by Leica - each was an M camera, with a significant omission.  They actually don’t want to make an MEVF.

No. I would 100% NOT buy one.

I had EVF cameras.  I came to Leica M to get away from EVF cameras. Why would I buy a Leica with an EVF?

The whole point of shooting an M is to shoot a rangefinder.

Leica can make anything they want, but why call it an “M”? Without a rangefinder it isn’t an M.

Seems a lot of people here want a Fuji XPro that says “Leica” on it. Can’t you just get a Fuji and put a sticker? They sell the Leica dots stickers. Just get the XF to M adapter and you’re done. The Voigtlander one even has close focus.

A Fujifilm lens cap could be useful sometimes.

Oh that’s a nice logo! Leica should you 10% for that. It will certainly raise the sells by that percentage. Real German too, like how they depict extra power versions of Mercedes and Audi.

It wouldn't be an M or and SL. It'll have it's own letter. A manual focus only M mount mirrorless camera. Same size as the M or maybe the Q2. M11 battery. Q2 evf in the top left corner. 6 bit coding and some auto detection when you focus the lens for viewfinder enlargement.

For everybody who keeps whining that an M-mount camera with an EVF is not an "M camera" pls. read what the starter of this survey said in his opening post (bolding is mine). So no need to worry about that 😜

Me too, though only a couple of months ago, for the exact same reason.

If I want to use an EVF (with M/manual focus lenses), I can use my A7C (better in every single aspect than my M240). But I want the rangefinder experience.

So, for me, if I want the "rangefinder experience" - there is only Leica (so I had to pay the(ir) price). If I want EVF, then there are far better (and cheaper) cameras out there.....

And to answer the topic's question: Not for me but I'd be happy and I don't care if it exists.

Hey, I'll buy a Leica rangefinder even if I don't care about "the rangefinder experience"! (IRL, I did, but work with me here.)

What if I bought a Leica M primarily for the lenses? What if I bought it because the system is compact, and I can't lug around a big bag of gear anymore? What if I bought it to see what the hype was about? What if I bought it because it's so well made and designed?

People are allowed to buy a camera for any reason they want.

Indeed and claiming that there are better and cheaper EVF cameras with M lenses is a good joke. Seems like naysayers to the EVF-M are in panic mode i don't know why :D

Sure, there are cameras which can be adapted to take M lenses - none are optimised for M lenses (apart from the SL(601)), and having opted for a camera which feels and operates like a camera, I have no desire for a camera with a complex menu system designed and optimsed for lenses I don’t have or want …

I see very few opponents to the idea, let alone in panic.  I see only a number of posters doubting the practicality and economic feasibility.
I thought that your Kolari-hacked Sony was so good ?

Well I've used Mlenses on both A7 series Sonys and the SL and in all honesty they're not that bad on either. I wonder what the consensus here would be if Sony marketted an M shaped version of the A7 series cameras?

I've used Fuji, Ricoh, SL, CL, and Kolari mod Sonys, the latter being my favorite in full frame, but none can compete with the M11 as far as M lenses are concerned. Strange that it may come as a surprise on a Leica M11 forum...
