Changing File Names on the M11 can only applied to ONE letter (software bug?)

Dear all,

I use the M11 for client photo jobs and thus need to change the file names. On my M10M, M10-P and M10-R this is no problem. But on the M11 I can find the option under CAMERA SETTINGS then go to CHANGE FILE NAMES but then I can only change ONE LETTER. On the other Leica M10 versions I was able to change at least 3 letters.

Can you M11 users confirm that? I am not sure whether this is a software bug.

Thanks in advance,

Michael

I also found this change bizarre.

I set my M10-R files to all start with "LMTR".  My M10-M files all start with "LMTM".

My M11 files all start with... L.

Hopefully Leica can spare us a few more characters with a firmware update, without having to buy an M11-P :)

That's curious. I haven't really spent much time on the file naming FEATURE, but on my M10-R with latest firmware, I could ONLY change the first Letter,
but I didn't spend much time working on this.
Because I have different cameras and prefer the file names to be be easily identified in the computer, I prefer to be able to Name the M files too.

Until today I was close to buying an M11 to replace my M240 that I bought several years ago but I have just learned that I would not be able to change the first three digits of the file names. When I added an M246 when it was announced, I changed my my naming convention to using the the camera model type as part of the file number. The M11 is now on the back burner.

I can change the first three letters or numbers on my file names on my M11-P. I would think the M11 is the same.

I have changed the letters on my M11-P to "LPP*******" so as to distinguish the files from my M11 and my Phase One files which start with P. I didn't realize you cannot change more than one letter with the M11.

So I have L****, LPP**** and P***.

Works for me1

I have just looked at the manual for the M11, M11M and M11P and only the M11P lets you change the first three letters of the file name. I would think that was something that could have been added with the firmware updates.

Edit: It seems like the file name edit was maybe part of 2.0.1

That detail should not be a reason for not buying an M11 which is the best M ever. Change that name while importing into Lightroom classic (or any other tool). 😇

I had a real issue with this as well coming from Nikon and their numbering system. Now - I reset the numbers (which creates a new numbered folder), shoot whatever up to hundreds of images and then on import I change the beginning of each file to the folder number. Example L0000025 becomes 150 - 025.

This solves the problem of having multiple files with the same number all over my computer! Some people never reset the numbers or use new folders - but I find that I need to do that.

Upon import into LRC I change the file names to DATE TIME of when the picture war taken. That information is in the EXIF data. Through this I never bothered about file names or duplicates.

UTC or local time? What happens if you fly from Japan to Hawaii?

As the camera takes the time from my iPhone there is no problem there (local time).

And more specific: I never flew from Japan to Hawai.

And of course it might happen that for some reason the change from winter to summertime does not work: In LR Classic you always have the option to change that for one single image or as a batch.

I like to see the date and time as the name of an image. Without opening the EXIF you know when an image has been taken.

First and foremost make sure you are using the latest FW.

First and foremost make sure you have a look at the date of the post you are responding to...it is 2 years and 2 months old. But thank you anyway, I still own the M11 and have been on FW 2.0.x for 3 months...
