KenTanaka Posted January 14, 2022 Share #1 Posted January 14, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) Am I seeing this correctly? The good news: No more having to dismantle the bottom of the camera to change the memory card or the battery. The bad news: Now you only have to remove the battery to change the memory card?! Is that correct?
Advertisement Posted January 14, 2022 Posted January 14, 2022 Hi KenTanaka, Take a look here The New M11 Battery; Good News / Bad News?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
RexGig0 Posted January 14, 2022 Share #2 Posted January 14, 2022 (edited) Apparently, yes. See Kai Wong’s you-tube video. (I have watched multiple videos, but just happen to remember that he showed this part, and, his entire presentation is short enough to make it easy to find.) The base of the battery extends beyond the body of the battery, and acts to cover the memory card slot. Edited January 14, 2022 by RexGig0
Eclectic Man Posted January 14, 2022 Share #3 Posted January 14, 2022 The video on the Leica web site shows the battery covering the SD card slot. On the bright side this means that you do not risk damaging the card by removing or inserting it with the camera powered on (unless using it tethered, of course). KenTanaka Posted January 14, 2022 Author Share #4 Posted January 14, 2022 Acht! Thank you. Almost like a kind of malicious design compliance with the decade-long cries to banish the removable bottom plate. 🤷🏻♂️ True personal anecdote: While I was gleefully taking my first shiny new Leica M camera for its maiden run in a city park I stopped at a bench to change film. I glanced up and saw a little girl of about 6 or 7 standing nearby absolutely mesmerized by this process. Her mother quickly took her hand and led her away, saying quietly, “Come on Dana, let’s let the nice man try to fix his old camera!”
kivis Posted January 14, 2022 Share #5 Posted January 14, 2022 Did we advance the journey or go backwards?
SrMi Posted January 14, 2022 Share #6 Posted January 14, 2022 Advance. Taking the battery out and putting it back is much simpler and faster than handling the bottom plate (my first Leica was the M8).
eab Posted January 22, 2022 Share #7 Posted January 22, 2022 Advertisement (gone after registration) I don't mind the new design at all and actually prefer it. In my mind a camera is like a boat, the fewer holes thru the hull the better. In this case the fewer openings in the camera body, especially the bottom the less places for water to get in. If the battery seal is good, then one less seal to worry about. Also, the battery really does last so normally I go out, take some pictures, come home, take the battery put it on the charger if necessary and put the sd card in the reader..... It is very rare when I would take an SD card out when I am out so as I said, I appreciate its simplicity.
Tailwagger Posted January 22, 2022 Share #8 Posted January 22, 2022 If the SD slot location annoys you that much just use the usb port for file xfer, unless, of course a port on the camera bottom annoys you even more.
digitalfx Posted January 22, 2022 Share #9 Posted January 22, 2022 Its an M...not a lot of room to have a separate door for a relocated SD slot...and do you want a SD Card door? I really like this design and new battery...much faster and more convenient than bottom plate.
shirubadanieru Posted January 22, 2022 Share #10 Posted January 22, 2022 (edited) this came up in other threads. here's all the scenarios you'd need to take the SD card out: when you run out of SD card AND internal memory during a shooting. For everything else: format card / transfer photos all in camera. Use a usb-c cable & that's it. Better yet, skip the SD & use the internal memory. Not an issue.
