I have another camera system for focal lengths >50mm as probably do many other photographers interested in a Q.

That's exactly the market segment Leica should target with a 50mm equipped Q as a second line.

Instead of buying a Q with 28mm and a Canon/Sony/etc with 50mm, you could buy a Q with a 28mm lens AND a second Q with a 50mm lens.

Yeah, you're right. That was a poor example. I guess my main point was that the need  of some (forum dwellers) does not reflect the need of the whole userbase  and polling a forum would reflect only a small portion of Leicas userbase as well as some who don't even own a Leica (me) but would like one. What I do like is that they did not outright reject the idea of the longer FL. Seeing how successful the GRIIIx is with it's 40mm eq. lens one might wonder what Leica is up to.

I  think it's the other way around. People already have a system Leica M/SL/Canon/Nikon/Sony/whatever and see the Q as a nice addition. At least that's how I see it. Instead of purchasing a fast wide angle lens and a second camera body I just get the Q and have a really small addition to my ILC-gear.

Leica has a pretty good connection to its user base, probably better than any other camera manufacturer.  The people on this forum are Leica users anyway - of course you need to keep your existing users happy, but Leica needs to grow its user base, so just polling [what is probably] a small segment may not address the wider issue.

And a poll of existing Q users will not provide a definitive answer as far as focal length is concerned.  My guess, and it is only a guess, is that the Q3 will still have a fast 28mm lens with a higher resolution sensor and that will provide better options for cropping.  It happened from Q > Q2 making equivalent 75mm usable.  The problem with starting at 40mm or 50mm is you can't go wider.

Leica has pretty much decided that cropping is the new zoom.

I believe this to be true as well. The concept just works and is successful, obviously. Otherwise they would not be working on the third iteration of the Q. That is not to say a Q50 wouldn't be succesful as well but they won't change the formula of the Q3.

Even with a small sample size the results can still be conclusive. Statistical significance can be measured to calculate the likelihood that the sample size is reflective of the population. For example if you asked 100 forum members whether they would prefer 35mm or 28mm then a 60/40 split would be inconclusive but a 85/15 split would begin to suggest which way the population is leaning. They could also mail shot their Q/Q2 customer base (if they are permitted).

Yes.
instead of buying a Hasselblad X with the 80mm I will be able to get a Q3-50mm.  with its leaf shutter and save a lot of money.

Yes, but it's also a chicken and egg problem. They have the other system because there's no 50mm option offered.

I'd consider selling my other gear and stick to a Q28mm + Q50mm as my main bodies and nothing else.

There's at least one (ex?) forum user that sold his M10 and now shots only with the Ricoh GRIII and GRIIIx.

For example if you asked 100 forum members

go to a car enthusiast forum and ask whether they'd like a straight V6 3L and Sports package or a 1.4L 4 cylinder with 17" rims as standard configuration and you'd get a 100/0 split. So what gives? Forums are hardly representative for the general population that buys those cars/cameras/whatever else.

I'm very much looking forward to that  Q3 with an 28mm lens and that 60MP Sony sensor. Gives you usable 28/35/50 files and if you want to really push it even 75.

Good observation. I hadn't even considered that forum members could be a biased sample. Hmmm

I would disagree. Daniels handling of the development and marketing of the Leica APSC line was poor to say the least. There was plenty they could have done but Daniels couldn’t be bothered seems to be the conclusion. If that’s listening to customers I suggest he buys himself some hearing aids.

Fuji has a lens for the 100V that is wider.

Anyway I predict a compact zoom. 28-35-50mm on the Q

Stefan mention in the back that they got the smallest shutter and to keep everything compact is was only possible on the 28 without increasing the lens size.

Maybe they found another supplier in the last few years and we get a fantastic new product.

The reason I like the two variants is that you can easily crop the 28 to a 35 without losing too much of the file size.  With a 50 Q you could do the same crop to a 75 and still have a large file…

can’t really do that with the 28 lens all the way to 75 and get away with it.

I've always thought that this could be interesting depending on much of a compromise it is for the lenses speed and size. Ideally, I'd rather see something like 28-50-75 but that would result in lenses that is even slower and larger. However, a 28-35-50 with the 48MP or 60MP sensor may be a good compromise since it would mean a good bit of digital zoom would be possible by cropping the 50mm.

Coming from a Ricoh GR IIIx (40mm equivalent), I'm actually wanting a wider lens and am totally fine with 28mm.. 🤷🏼‍♂️

My problem has more to do with waiting to see/buy a Q3M, or buy Q2M now... first world problems, I know.

The Monochrome version of the Q3 may not come for years. That's not an option I would be considering given the timeframe involved. Just think of all the shots you could get in the meantime with the Q2M.
