I have a 50mm lens but it is my least used focal length. Sometimes I find a use for it but my 35mm is by far my most used lens. It all depends on your own preferences nothing more.

So……. I love pizza , I’ve tasted pineapple.
are you saying people put pineapple on top of pizza?

I doubt I would try that , in fact I don’t know a place that sells such a thing….. sounds VERY west coast 😊

New York Pizza

" ...

Ah yes, who hasn’t heard of it, one time or another? New York Pizza.

I have to say, it’s nice. Pretty nice. The amount of pineapple, the good sized pieces of ham, the salt on the crust, the thickness of the pizza bottom,

It kinda all adds up. Except that it doesn’t really look appealing.

Only a few 50mm lenses taste like the $2,000 gold-leaf pizza serving by Industry Kitchen that’s topped with English Stilton cheese, French foie gras and truffles, the all-important Ossetra caviar, and 24-karat gold leaf all across the top for a very glittery and opulent presentation.

You'll never know if you don't even try it.😀

I probably use my 50 mm Summicron DR as much as my other M lenses (24, 40, 75,90, 135) combined.  The 24mm and 135 are special purpose and are used rarely, living mostly in the safe; the 40 and 75 are next and usually in the bag but the 50 is my body cap and "walking around" lens.  I do miss my 35 Summicron and will probably replace it fairly soon.  Before COVID when I traveled monthly I carried the 35, 50 and 90 Summicrons and M9 body. The 40mm Voigtlander and 75mm 7 Artisans were an experiment to see if two lenses could essentially cover in place of a 3 lens travel combo. Sadly I forgot the 40mm brings up the 50mm frame lines so composition is a "crap shoot" unless I take time to use the preview lever so a 35 (sold with my M9 body) needs to be added to my stable.

I’ve used 28mm, 75mm and 90mm before..and even though 75mm / 90mm work better for portraits than a 50mm..most lenses in this focal length are either too long / too heavy; if that doesn’t bother you then it’s totally fine, but I like small / light lenses, so the 50mm is a great lens for both portraits and street. Although for street I tend to use the 35mm more given it’s easier to focus by feel and can also do portraits well enough when needed. I’d say the 35mm is a more versatile lens, but I do prefer the rendering of a 50mm over a 35mm..the 35mm frame lines are better too; I really don’t like the 50/75 frame lines in the newer cameras, so I tend to use my 50mm in the older leica bodies.

Again if you don’t mind the weight / length a 35/75 combo or 28/90 or any similar combination should be great. If you value weight / length though, hard to beat a 35 or a 50mm lens. And like many people mentioned here, there are 50mm since the 1920s until now to try, and each of them is fairly different. It’s the focal length that defined Leica, so it’s definitely worth it in my opinion : ) It won’t hurt to try hehe

do you consider the 50 a core must have ?

Yes. I consider it home base. I will venture away from it as the mood and subject takes me, but when I put the camera to bed, it has a 50 on it.

Interesting,

my core kit is 35 75 crons, I agree 75 is a tiny bit heavy which is why I went for it over the 90.  a couple years ago I wanted to expand and battled between the 24 and 21. I went with a 21 SEM because it offered a large and very significant difference from the 35, additionally it’s gorgeous.

I find that I migrate over time.  For a long time 28 was the core.  Right now I've been a 35 only shooter for about 6 months.  I've looked at the 50 cron a few times recently but it still hasn't made out into the world with me.

Right now I have one 50 and probably wouldn't miss it if I didn't have it.

I used an M9-P with a 40mm f1.4 Nokton as my #1 lens for many years and, FWIW, the outside-edges of the 50mm framelines are normally a pretty good indication of the image-area which will be recorded.

There will still be a small amount of excess 'air' around the image but it's a far better solution (IMX) to using the 35mm frame-lines as the latter shows areas which will NOT be in the actual image as captured. Cropping a small amount of stuff which is there is better than missing some stuff which simply isn't...

Just a suggestion.

Philip.

Depends on what I’m photographing ie, if it’s work, such as a wedding or event, I can, and do, frequently switch between a 28mm and a 50mm all day, rarely resorting to anything wider or longer.

For portrait sittings, I do the same but with a 35mm and 75mm or 90mm.

For my personal work as primarily a landscape & travel photographer, I’ll take a 28mm, 50mm and 90mm.  The 28mm is my most used, around 60%, and the 50mm comes in somewhere around 30%.

Out of my 10 Leica M lenses, 3 are 50mm, 2 are 28mm and 2 are 90mm, so to answer the question ‘is 50mm a core focal length?’, I’d say yes.
Definitely.
