The reviews of the new Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN | Art were not bad on the Internet and I suppose it is a perfect match to my latest toy, the Panasonic S1R. I was really tempted since I do not own a zoom lens for concerts or any sport events. A similar lens of the competitor Panasonic cost twice as much as the Sigma. I am not a professional photographer so my choice between these lenses was easy. The lens-AF turns the S1R into a fully featured computer with myriads of options in the menu and the 10 button on the camera body. It is actually too much functionality for me. I need to get used to the camera in the next few weeks and months. Now I remember what "Das Wesentliche" means. All in all it is big fun to use this combination and play around with a zoom lens.

Compared to my Leica lenses the size of the Sigma is ridiculous big. Luckily it is not too heavy but both the S1R and the lens feels like a millstone hanging on my neck. So here is one of my first shots with this lens. More images will follow eventually.

f/2.8 + 45mm - no smearing corners or fall off. There is nothing to complain about. Almost perfect. I haven't noticed yet a unique 'character' like so many M-lenses. No idea why the Sigma lens is named 'Art' lens.

Hi,
I have been a silent reader of this forum for a while now, helped me a lot to decide which camera to buy. I went with a S1, coming from Fuji (and 5D II years before that).

I just wanted to say that I immediately recognized your first photo @01maciel, greetings from Steglitz, have been there just a week ago :) If I ever need a 24-70 I'll consider the Sigma, as the Panasonic is double the price and just as expensive as the Leica 24-70 I think?

greetings from Steglitz

I went to Berlin/Steglitz last weekend to buy the Sigma at the local dealer down there. A nice guy in the shop recommended the 'Südgelände' to shoot some photos, just around the corner. So I took my new S1R and my even newer Sigma lens to the spot and tried to get used to it. It was the first time in 5 years I used an autofocus. My M10 is much easier to handle.

Concrats to your new S1. I suppose the Panasonic S* are not too bad;)

Leistenschneider?

And yes, the S1(R) is a lot of camera to get used to. Also everything is so big and heavy. I never used a M10, so no idea about that, but the S1 can be a bit overwhelming imo. The last time I  really cared for photos was back when I had the 5DII, and that was a machine from a different age compared to modern cameras haha. The Fujis weren't bad or anything, but not full frame and so small 🤷‍♂️

Why did you get a zoom and S1?

indeed. They are quite nice and willing to discuss the price tag.

I have a few fixed focal length lenses for the M10. Most of them are exceptional but sometimes I miss a zoom lens for sport events or concerts. For other purposes I miss a min focal distance < 0.5m. Both can do the Sigma. Compared to the Leica lenses the Sigma is clinical sharp and I miss a special character.

I noticed that, too. The lenses I got are just unbelievable sharp. I liked some of my Fuji primes and always missed the Canon L primes I used ~10 years ago, but wow.

Both my 35mm 1.2 and the 135mm 1.8 are simply insane. But they are huge and it looks like that's what all manufacturers are after these days. No drawbacks, perfectly sharp photos wide open, eye focus does the rest :)

At some point I'll probably get something like a M, but sadly that was out of my budget.

'Art' is just Sigma's designation for their high end range of lenses, like Contemporary denotes their midrange lenses, not because they have been made recently. Kind of like Sony G Master and Canon L.
