I have said I believe the 18-56 to be a slightly better optic.  You're also pixel peeping at 200% and towards the outer edge of the frame, I'm surprised it's as close as it is. Thank you Jayne. Would you have a raw file available per chance? I'd like to check what opcodes the CL creates for this lens, if any.

Happy to hear that users here have the opposite impression! https://uk.pcmag.com/lenses/33966/leica-vario-elmar-t-18-56mm-f35-56-review https://uk.pcmag.com/lenses/136363/sigma-18-50mm-f28-dc-dn-contemporary 18-56mm TL was tested in 2014 on Leica TL 16MP with low pass filter but without IBIS. Whereas Sigma 18-50mm DC DN was reviewed in 2021 on Sony A7R IV in APS-C mode 26MP without low pass filter but with IBIS. Obviously the latter will be much sharper due to MP counts, no anti aliasing filter and IBIS activated ! Not to count different testing methods due to 6 years hiatus. Edited November 11, 2021 by nicci78
Marac Posted November 11, 2021 Share #44 Â Posted November 11, 2021 Just ordered my 18-50 direct from Sigma UK, will be delivered tomorrow & I will test it out on the CL. I am aware of it's downfalls and quirks but I think that I will enjoy it regardless of those. No point comparing it to a Leica lens. I will enjoy it for what it is, a compact zoom with a constant f2.8 and close focus ability. Had a nice chat with the man at Sigma regarding the future of L mount lenses & requested they consider making a pancake lens or 2, maybe an 18mm & 23mm so the CL will be truely pocketable and also a wide angle zoom like their 12-24. He did say that there will be a couple of new lenses available in L mount in the new year. Happy days
lct Posted November 11, 2021 Share #45  Posted November 11, 2021 Just ordered one too. Jayne (Boojay) has been kind enough to send me a couple DNG files showing a rather strong native distortion when opcodes are removed but with opcodes on, distortion doesn't look badly corrected and images are cropped in order to avoid smearing effects at edges or corners. BTW the CL works the same with other lenses, including Ms whose native distortion is lower obviously.

Hi, I am a bit naïve here but please explain what you mean by opcodes on and off. I assume these are the data exchanged between the lens and the camera but how can they be turned off? Since you mentioned this in the DNG files I am guessing you are talking about in post processing. Indeed i use a free program for that, DNG cleaner. Allows for removing opcodes (optical codes) from RAW files providing software distortion correction. Example on a Leica Q below. Boojay Posted November 11, 2021 Share #48  Posted November 11, 2021 Tried it on the SL2 today, performed as I expected, nice light walk around for the heavier body which of course has enough pixels to make it still very useful. Marac Posted November 15, 2021 Share #52 Â Posted November 15, 2021 Worth the wait, picked it up today from the post office. I have only had a little time to play with it but thus far it is ticking all the boxes for me & will almost certainly become my walk-around lens. I will post some photos later.

Lens is sharp with a bit of flare but could be worse on a zoom lens. Distortion is strong but distortion correction looks even stronger. RAW shooters may prefer removing the opcodes and adjust distortion manually. I'll see how CA looks like tomorrow.

That was just an impression based on my own experience with the 18-56.  But I now see your shelf / sofa pictures concluded the same.  Edited November 17, 2021 by cpclee

Boojay Posted November 17, 2021 Share #59  Posted November 17, 2021 (edited) You also need to take into account depth of field given where I was focussing in the scene, possibly 20metres or so (nearer the man painting narrowboat), the leaves in the lower corner are maybe 1-2 metres in front of the camera and so would be out of the focal zone.  The more I look at the image, although it's pleasing enough, actually there is very little sharpness anywhere.   Edited November 17, 2021 by Boojay
mikeLD Posted November 17, 2021 Share #60  Posted November 17, 2021 I got my Sigma FP L today and tried it with my 18-50mm. The lens, of course, was automatically recognized as a 1.53 crop and that is displayed on the upper edge of the screen. The electronic stabilization in stills seems to work quite well and I was surprised to find the digital zoom works very well also. When the 18-50 is at any place in its focal range, squeeze pinching on the touch LCD switches to digital zoom (crop zoom) and shows the range of the crop from 0 to 5 which is adjusted by the front wheel while in the crop zoom mode. It worked surprisingly good even at 50mm and a crop zoom factor of 5x... When I have time I'll post some pics.
